Thai stanch old Knglish statt-s-luan, Gladstone, who is workiug for not only the Irish but also the best interests of all of Great liritian, indefatigably sticks to the "home role" plan for Ireland. The Irish Worlds gives a full report of one of his recent speeches in the course of which hi; says: "If you will forgive me I will undertake to prove to you these three proposi tions, which in their united force I )tii appear to me to be absolutely irresistible. First, there is not in the wide world a single cr.se of two countries where separation has been caused tatween them by the i?rant of autonomy or local inde pendence. This is my first proposi tion." My second proposition is that there are cases in the world and it is easy to point them out where the separaiion of two coun tries has been caused by the refusal f local independence. And my third proposition is that there are abundant cases in the world in winch s?puration has been pre-! vented by the grant of local inde-' peudenre, when otherwise it was certain to take place. You will often hear our opponents refer, undoubtedly iu the most shallow and superficial manner, to the case of the I'nited States of America. They say, "Did the United States grant the demand for separation? No, they thought it right to establish the supremacy of the Union." Perfectly true. They had a demand for separation which we have not. They estab lished the supremacy of the union, Where all the capital comes from. ie recent floating of a batch of American brewery companies is an event which deserves the serious consideration of the brewing trade here, for not only has a large amount of capital been directed into this channel whic'i might have devoted to native enterprise, but there is the possibility that British capital is maintaining and encouraging a foreign industry which, at ro distant period, may become a formidable competitor with our own brewers. It may be interesting in the first place to re mind our readers of the very large extent to which British capital has been invested in American brew eries." It then gives a list of eleven American companies which sold upwards of thirty millions of stack in England, and concludes as follows: "There is no doubt the; bulk of the 0,500,000 here repte-! sented has been subscribed by , British capitalists, and the transfer j of so large an amount to support ! the brewing industry across the) Atlantic cannot tail to have some i the markets.
