The Oregonian relates thai at tlie Esmond hotel is staying a unique character in the person of Mr. John G. Witte, of New York. Fcr the past thirty-seven years he has been traveling almost constant ly, through the United State?, Canada and Europe, on business and pleasure combined, and has acquired a vast fund of information about places and people. lie is ery genial and jovial, aud like xiost ieople who have traveled extensively, is a good and interest talker, lie is a great collector of curiosities, and has gathered from the many countries he has visited a valuable collection. A numoer of prominent business Bien who have knewn him for years, called on him yesterday, to whom he exhibited a few rare things which he has along with him. One of these was a wonder ful knife made in 1811 and pre sented to Napoleon I. The work man ship is very fine, the materials being gold, silver, steel and pearl. It was carried by Napoleon during his disastrous Russian campaign, and contains twenty-one blades and implements. He has refused $o00 for this knife and has willed ' it to the New York Historical Society upon his death. Mr. Witte is something of a naturalist and has a great fondness for strange pets. While convers ing with his friends yesterday he brought out from his pocket a pretty little Hying squirrel, as tame as possible, which, when told that it was Sunday sat up on its haunches, folded its pavs across its breast and moved its jaws as if praying. From another pocket he produced a small terrapin of the , -genuine diamond-backed variety, which crawled around the table and wiped off it noss with its little paws when bidden, but seemed (lad when restored to its warm nest in his pocket. Next he pro duced two horned toads, one from San Antonio, Tev., and the other rom California, and showed the difference in color, style of horns, tc., and then made, them close and open their eyes and perform other tricks. The flying squirrel has traveled 40,000 miles with him during the past two years. During the time he has been on the road Mr. Witte has traveled 500,000 miles. Although 58 years of age, he has the activity and ; exuberant spirit of a man of 30. He speaks fluently English, Ger man, French, Spanish and Latin, and having had his eyes open dur ing his travels, possesses a remark able fund of reminiscences and anecdotes. He has lately visited j the Yosomite valley, and to hear him tell of its beauties and won ders is almost as good as visiting it one's self. He will remain in that city for a short time,and hopes to secure some minerals, etc., to add to his wonderful museum, which all his friends do not fail to visit while in New York. Clackamas county likes to get a whack at Multnomah occasionally, and docs not lack of material from which to construct it. The Ore Ionian notices one as follows: "Last Sunday Judge W. L. White was crossiig tho suspeasion bridge," says an Oregon City paper, "when he met a fiae rig from Pert land. ' As it approached it stopped, and gentleman said: lnis is a toll bridge, I believe?' To which the judge responded: 'To, sir; Clackamas county is not building toll bridges. Drive right along. Ne one will molest you. We leave the building of ;o'.i bridges te Multnomah county.'"
