It then re quired the price of one bnshel of wheat to pay for one yard of calico, now one bushel of wheat will buy 20 yards of calico. The rains of the past two days, while it will undoubtedly damage to some extent the hay crop, near ly all of which is cut and in the shock, and but very little being housed, will materially assist in the development of late sown oats and wheat, and give a big impetus to corn and potatoes and like crops. Some, j of the very heavy winter wneat will probably go down but the most of that crop will be benefitted, and if no strong winds prevail, but a small amount will be lodged. Examples of astonishing human vitality are constantly happening contrary to all established theories of surgeons and physicians. The case of the injury to the spinal cord and fracture of three of the verte bra in the neck, that recently happened in San Francisco, by a bale of hay falling on a man's head, is the most remarkable of all. According to all experence upon the subject it should have caused instant death, but the man lived some time. The Chronicle says the death of James 15. Hill, the contractor, who lay for thirty-four daysAt'ith a broken neck, ends one of the most extraordinary cases of tiuman vitality on record. The man was dead from the armpits downward as soon as the bale of hay struck him. The total paraly sis of his body left him with simply the brain and the internal organs to support life. In ordinary cases the struggle ends in a few hours, or at most, in a few days, yet this man survived for more than a month, perfectly conscious, able to take considerable nourishment, yet for all practical purposes as dead as a mummr of the time of Pharaoh. The case simply shows that surgeons have much to learn of the power of the human frame to withstand disea e and grave injury. The cause for the expjrt of gold from th.s country to Lurope has been the subject of much conjec ture and theory, various reasons being assigned therefor. The Director of the Mint thinks that a premium offered by the bank of Frnce caused the wction but the Chronicle says that two mills on the dollar would never prove sufficient to draw gold from the United States, tho Director of the Mint to tlte contrary, notwithstand ing. The seed product will be sent to the oil mills at Portland. We are not informed as to whether the fibre will be utilized or not. The hop yards in various parts of the county, especially in Fox Valley are looking finely and give promise of a good harvest. The industry is quite an important one for this vitinitv. LINK COUNTY. Rich Lands Offered to The Seeking Loca tioior Profi .ble Inv.-.nnent. That this portion of Oregon pre sents a field offering superior in ducements to those desiting homes is made apparent when the re sources of Linn county are briefly noticed. It embraces the central and most fertile part of the far-famed Vil lamette Valley. It is probably the best watered section of the state. It is bounded on the west by the Willamette, and on the north by the north fork of the Santiam. The county embraces between six and eeve: tiers of townships from ' north to south, and from eleven to twelve from east to west, the area in acres being about 1.- L'50,000, or 7,812 quarter section tracts. Deducting tiie uncultivata- ble mountain tracts all valuable for pasturage or timber there would remain at least two-thirds of the whole adapted to cultivation, or an aggregate farming extent that could be sub-divided into 5000 quarter section farms. The soil on the margins of the water course is a black alluvial de posit or a sandy loam, with a clay sub-soil, and the up lands are gen erally characterized by red, brown or black loam. These soils are all rich and deep, producing abund antly grains, fruits and vegeta bles. Nowhere in the world do small graina lo rwttpr than in thf mm). try around Albany and tributary to" it in trade. Oregon wheat and Hour now being shipped to the markets direct hang heretofore been merged in the California crop they take the lead in the Liverpool quotations. At the head of the list is Oregon wheat and its central and choicest field of pro duction are in Linn county. The vield of wheat not infrequently. A Michigan quartz ve.'n, four feet in thickness, that yields a;old to the amount of 50,000 to the ton is the latest sensational find. It will probably be impossible to locate outside of imagination. It will not be amiss for those who are always preaching about the good old times, and the degen eracy of the present to ascertain that in lSlii it took just one bushel of corn to buy one pound of nails, now one bushel of com will buy 10 lound of nails.
