Be It now seems to be settled that the Astoria & South Coast Kail way line is to be built. Concern ing the road the Astorian says : "The Astoria & South Coast llailway Company builds the road. The road is to be built about a mile farther than originally contem plated. It runs clear through what is known as "tho Gearhart woods" and extends to the Ocean house, erMrs. Eyrd's place. The $175, 060 paid or pledged by Astorians is to be paid in. The Pacific Con struction Company pays in $200, 000 additional, and takes that amount of stock in Astoria & South Coast Railway Company. That $200,000 in stock is to be placed in the hands of D. K. Warren as trustee. Work is .to be pushed with all diligence and the road is to be completed as rapidly as possi ble. The road is to be run from the proposed pre.-ent terminus in the most direct route to the Xe halem and is to connect with the the Oregon A California standard gause railway or the Portland and Willamette "Valley railway in Washington and Yamhill counties. The road (which is the Astoria and South Coast railroad right through) j is to be completed to such connec-1 Won by September 15, 1S:1. This is guaranteed by tlu Pacific Con struction Company, an organiza tion with one hundred million dollars. The road will he about 100 miles in length. The Pacific Construction Company is to furnish the Astoria &. South" Coast Kail way Company all the money neces sary to build, equip and place in operation the entire road." In the meantime the Albany and Astoria Pa;lway Co., recently or ganized in this city with a capital stock of $15,000,000 is arranging to put surveyors in the field at once to survey the route for the proposed connection at Albany, and will secure t lie right of way and start the work going. The Salem board of tiade held a session Thursday to consider the project of building a narrow guage railroad from the west to that point through Dallas to Falls City, thence through the valuable timber belts of Lnckiamute valley and ulti mately to the coast. Judge J. J. Daly. Hon. W. C. Brown and L. Van Meter, of Dallas, were present and addressed the meeting. The scheme was favorably considered, anda committee consisting of J. H. Albert, II. W. Cottle, E. M. Waite, J. C. Putnam, and S. D. Gibson ! carries a 15 poind mercurial pen were appointed to confer with the j dulum bill attached to a four-foot Dallas committee and devise the steel pendulum rod, and onlv re- necessary ways and means for the earlr building of the proposed line.
