"MAX Li' WORDS FROM .SOUTH" THE j The Nash vilie American recently devoted two pages to the reiort of tlic uriveiiiny of the pplcndid mon ument to the Confederate dead at Nashville, Twin. The chief spokes man on the occasion was flon. W. C. 1. Breckinridge. He entered into sui exhaustive analysis of the eaue.s of the. secession movement, paying a lowiiii: tribute to the valor if ii.e Southern soldier, not forfeiting some words of praise for the Union veteran. Making due allowance for the fact that Sir. Ureckinridgw was heartily i:i sympathy with the cause of seces sion, and that the occasion de manded an eulogy of the Confeder ate soldier, we call attention to its closing words. Sir. Ilreckiuridge said, in concluding his finished oraton : It is absolutely certain that there never can he a revival of the attempt to have a division of the United .States of America upon any lines like unto those between the Confederate and Federal govern ments'. That effort, when it failed, failed necessarily forever, and there never was a more unwise and unnatural sentiment than the sentiment out of which has grown so much bitterness, that the people of the South did not recognize absolutely the complete failure of their attempt. There never has been a man who deserved lo be called a thinker nnd a soldier who did not re-jognizo that the surrend ers of lRG-" were final and irretriev able, and there has been in no part of the South any human bein Unit had tho slightest influence who did not know thut the destinv ! nations, that they might compare notes, congratulate each other on ; the ''manifold success of tne repub lican experiment, and render hom age to the anniversary of tbe great French Revolution. At the ban quet table no less than thirteen American republics made their appearance through their represen tatives, and this fact alone shows how congenial is American soil to free institutions. To be sure, some of the Central and South Ameri can republics are little so except in name. Their presidents are virtual dictators, and their con gresses but a trifle more powerful than courts of registry. Yet the republican form is itself a Tribute to the excellency of the republican idea. It is at least an ideal to which he Peruvian and the Guatemalan aspires, but which neither has not yet reached. All thirteen republics, moreove-. represent a mccessfui revolt from monarchy ; the United States from Kngland. the rest from Spain. Kings and kingship have not flourished on this western soil. There is but one left, the Emperor 01 Lrazii, anci ins government is almost republican in liberality and spirit. A monarch of the German or Russian type would not be toler ated for a moment at Rio d Jan eiro. Side by side with the repre sentatives of the American republics sat those of the republics of France and of Switzerland; both united to their American sisters by many ties of friendly service, sympathy, and mutual encouragement. Switzerland ca:no to show how, in the nr.dst of a continent swarming with huge armies and dominated by ambitious rival potentates, she has been able to live serenelv and peacefully on in a condition i i g I i ii ii i h a i ii i i i i i ;l t , I j 1 K t iv A VV H O) 0( . ! France could point to a century's struggle to obtain the boon of republican liberty, culminating in what ;dl must fervently hope is a perman ently free republican system. The absence of czar, kaiser, and king from the exhibition need not be too much regretted; a quieter yet grander spectacle is presented by the demonstration cf republican success, and by the example which the fifteen republics of Christendom set to thi iM-ople still under bonds ot enforced loyalty to hereditary masters. goods a specialty. prices are guaranteed to be satisfactory. Material interests, nf.er all, come nearer the heart and the fireside than politi cal considerations. The upbuild ing of magnificent industries in the south, and the sp!endid develop ment of its natural resources with the ;nllux oi Northern capital, all are doing for the Southern people what nothing else could accom plish. Prejudices on both sides are melting away, and the bittji ness of partisanship is decreasing. A truer appreciation of the neces sity for a union of hearts and of hands is solving tho most perplex ing problem of American history. Let tho gloriouft work continue. rc . t.
