THE The May report of tl: statistician bf tlie Agricultural Department contains home facts and figures which may fum.sh valuable hints to American farmer-. In the first place, it is shown that, in spite of the popular impression to the con trary, Europe grows almost wheat enough to feed herself without drawing on the stock of the United State or uny other foreign country. Europe raise 1,200,00,000 bushels ' yearly and imports 144,000,003 bushels, of which only 95,000,000 busueN come from the United States. Eu. ope raises more po'a. toes than .she needs. Of Indian ajirn Initio:., Iowa, or Missouri each grows more than twice as much as the entire product which siio requires. .She import 1,000, 000 pounds of rice, iiut nOue of it conies from this country, for it is cultivated by the cheapest kind of labor in the East Indies at wages which are unknown in the United states. It will surprise a great many people to learn that Europe grows about as much tobacco as the United Htatc3, but she con sumes so much more that some 240,000,000 pounds of American tobacco are a tmually imported. I n the matter of wool, Earope raises ' leas than half rf what she requires, bat she purchases from .South America, Asia, Africa, and Austra liaj a quantity tiro or three times us large as she takes from us. There are yery few lines of Agricultural products our exports of which the de partment thinks can be materi al y enlarged. Chee?e is oe of these, if it could gain and hold a better rcputatiou, and butter might find a wider market if it improved in quality. As it is, it is to ho feared that our dealers think lie, and we should have a coaling sta ion tiiere. The interests of cur erowin ' navv will reauire 6ucli a station on that island in the near fat ire. It is a pity that peace can not be arranged between the Haytian belligerents. Tlie grounds of dispute between Ilippolyte and Legitime ate too insignificance to warrant the bloody contest now b -ing waged. Under a good and stable government Ilayti might become an extremely valuable poss ss'on. lis land is fertile and asi y c iltivate l, and it has great natural a Wantages for trade with the ' Un.tsd states. Even under its resent government we sold to it last yetr $1,617,000 worth of goo U, and V oua'ht of it $2,018,000 This trade is capable of being ex panded immensely. But while we I inight use our good offices in pro- i m ting peace, public sentiment in this country would not favor a protectorate. ItlAllUIKII. Such assistance would only be furnished as a return for concessions in trade or land, which would give the natiou rendering aid an undue adrantage oter its ooui'Hstitors. The treaty relations between the United States and Hayti will not admit of amy such concession, iloreovei , th is count ry could not permit of European in terference in Ilayti. The reason which lead us to protect Samoa from foreign control apply with much greater force in the case of Hayti. It is right at our door, as it were, and would serve as u place of rendezvous for a foreign lleet iu ease of trouble with this country. The .Monroe doctrine in x.Virit, if not in letter, requires that Hayti bekeptfrefi from foreign control. There if, probably, no truth in the report of a Franco-Hay tian alliance. France would not bs likely to enter into any such complication at this time. But it is prudent for our governme nt to take necessary measures to maintain its interests in Hayti, which Ls probably, tlie only reasjn tor sending war-vessel.- there at this time.
