Following is the Crop Weather Bulletin No. 11, for the week ending May 18. 1SS9, reported by the Oregon State Weather Bureau co operating -with U, S. Signal Service, central office, Portland, Oregon. Tbe past week has been one of rain, little sunshine and about an average temperature. The notable feature of the week was the storm on the 13th, wiiich foundered the steamer Alaskan oft" the Oregon coast, and gave to the tsate heavy rains, thunder and hail. The first report of the thunder sty.rm is trom Lane county, where rain fell iu torrents and hail fell to a depth of from 6 o 12 inches. The thunder tt'irm moved nortu principally on the west side of the Willamette river, reaching Portland at j3:35 r. m. A portion if the storm meved north to Tocoma, doing damage and fatally injuring some persons, another por tion tr.oved eastward giing copious rains through VVa3co, Morrow and Umatilla count:e3, causing the rivers and 8tieims to rapidly rise, and doing slight damage. While west of the cascades reports indicate that the wet weather has been of injury to winter wheat, in Eastern Oregon reports show that the late rains have been of great benefit. Never before has there been such uniform and flattering reports in regard to the prospects of crops as now come in from Oregon aa a whole and Eastern Oregon in particular. In Western Oregon while the rains hare not been beneficial to winter wheat, .to the spring - wheat it has given it strength, and it shows promises of more than an average yeild. Warm sunshine is needed now to mature more rapidly the strawberries and cherries, which have been greatly re- tarted by the cloudy, wet weather. In the Umpqua valley the straw berry pickers have been wearing gum clothes while picking the fruit. In the Willamette valley there is danger of the winter wheat going into too much straw and to fall, clover iu sections have a tendency to lodge. The rainfall for the week has been above the average, the sunshine htluw the average and the tempera ture about normal. B. S. Pague, Observer, Signal Service. It was a Clever Trick. No oi'.e enjoys feeling that he has been the object of a clever trick, yet there are circumstances under which p que n.ust yield to the humor of the Bitiuli r. In the days when Cali tvriiia did not seem aa near the Ivast as traveling by rail has since maie it, a man entered the otlice of a Sac Francisco banker ami said: "I want exchange for tLis on New York." "All riuht. What is it?" The man looked fearfully around him and then brought out a packet. "It's $25,000 in greenbacks." "I guess I can do it. Going East?"' "Yes, I'm going to-morrow, I don't want to carry all this with me. Couldn't do it. Sure to get robbed, so cive me a draft." . i i i- : . i uo, Beeiug a i yuu, oiiepurceui two nunarea ana nuy aonars. It goes." The banker made out the draft on New York, aud, as he handed it to the man, asked if he wouhl mind taking along a small parcel, to be delivered iu New York to the bauker's brother. The man was will ing to undertake the errand, and the banker, having goue into the other room, presently came back with the n ircel. "Just put it u( yonr valse, and dm t lose it, will you? "I'll take the best care of it.'' "Thank you. Good by. Pleasant trip." ' Arriving in New York the Cali formal went lo the alAress and delivered the package. He then pre stilted his draft, The man opened the package and gave him the idenn cal $25,000 he had deposited in San Francisco. He carried them all the pray himself. Tea Caanet Aflerd. I am reminded of this bj tbe manner in which Sena tor Hawlcy 6tele a inarch en all his republicans colleagues bj get ting invited to accompany tbe President during a three- days pleasure trip en tbe U . When the fact is remem bered that great t.-euble is con stantly being indergene bj Sena tors, Members and ether influential republicans in order te get tbe Presidentsar for a few annates it can be fully understood what a very fortunate man Senator Haw ley is in being able, to speak to the President at any time he may desire for three whole days. The other member of the I'residentfal party which left here Saturday morning boand for Chesapeake Bay and returned to nigbt were ' Mrs. Harrison, and two McKee children and Secretaries Wmdom and Rusk. There are a number of men in Washington who would have paid a big price to have taken Senator Hawlcj's place. To-day the count iu tbe cash in the United States Treasury begins. It is expected that it will take nearly or quite three months to complete it. The count is made necessary by the change in the office of Treasurer.
