Humphrey, justice of the peace, and ex-oflicio coroner, were sum moned, and armed with a shovel they proceeded to the spot indicated, when they begun to unearth the remains. A quantity of gray hair, Icoking suspiciously like that of some aged man. were found, at which juncture a first class sensation seemed imminent, Farther investigation, however, revealed the fact thu the remains were these of a quadruped, sup- Dosed to be some shaggy, delunct canine. The Yaquina Republican savs: Drs. 1. S. Byrne and C. E. By'rne of New York came in from the east on Sunday. They bought about $3,000 worth of Newport property before they left. ALBAHY WILL BE ADVEB7ISED. 8oms Flas Views and Descriptivs Matter to 8applant Its 8ttte Famphlets. At a meeting of the Board of Trade of this city Friday night ar rangements were made to publish several thousand pamphlets des scription of the resources and ad vantages of Albany and surround ing country, to be distributed at the national encampment of the G. A. R. to be held at Milwaukee in August. Since the meeting the committee has wisely decided that it would be better topublish about 20,000 extra copies of the fine birdseye view and accompanying illustrations and descriptive mat ter now being prepared by the Mliott Publishing Co., of San Francisco, for the Herald and several of the real estate firms and others of this city, and distribute them instead of the proposed pam phlets. The average pamphlet has become to be somewhat stale in this age of pictures, and tne fine i views now contemplated by the committee, which would be ac companied by brief descriptive matter, a map showing the rail roads centering . here, and other information, would be the most attractive matter that could be placed in the hands of those in the hast whe are interested in this country. It is also proposed to send a car load of fruit and otner products of this portion of Oregon, which, to gether with the printed informa tion, will be placed in charge of some representative man or this city, who will accompany the ex cursion in the interest of this city and surrounding country. Follow ing the recommendations of Hon. E. B. McElroy, Mr. J. V. Cusick will probably go as such represen tative of Albany. It will be a good opportunity to advertise the different portions of the state, and the manner in which those in charge of this un dertaking are making arrange ments will if followed out result in much direct benefit bein!X secured by this city. COAST NOTES. The Oregon A Washington terri tory railroad is to be exter.ded from Fulton, its present terminus. to Pendleton, a distance of seven miles. Tne line is now being re located. A Pendleton gentleman iu Portland says that the road will be completed and ready for opera tion within sixty days. Company "I," O. N. The faculty oi the medical de partment of the State University were elected in Portland last Mon day, and are Dr. S. K. Joseph i, dean ; Dr. C. C. Strong, secretary ; Dr. Holt C. Wilson, treasurer. The faculty has for some time had under consideration the question of elevating the standard of medical edacation in this state, and at the meeting above mentioned unani mously resolved that it will here after require, as " one of the essentials for graduation, three courses of lectures, instead of two as was heretofore the rule. The next session will commence in October. SUNDAY SCHOOL C0SVENTI0N. Portland, Or., May 3.
