Persons ami events .connected with the settlement of different sections of Oregon ? " What positron does the grange hold in the opinion of the public? What position and, influence might the fanners wield if all le longed to the grange ? What is the income from my farm? These are given only as sugges- tire and as leading to others fully are more important. The main thing is to bring out thought, action, communication and consul tation together, and the course taken is sure to lead to that result. 1889 889 The Alto' Bakery ! -Under the ns toanairtmeut oi Tux senate committee on Indian affairs, under the supervision of Senator Dawes, have arranged for atrip this summer through the Northwest for the purpose of inves tigating the condition of Indians. The committee will leave Chicago July 1 and proceed to Portland, thence to Tacoma, W. T., and to Sitka, Alaska. Returning they will go over the Northern Pacific to St. Paul. Thk news of the rescue of the entire crow and passengers of f tie wrecked lanmar!; with hut the loss of a singlo life will be hailed with joy throughout the country. That 700 souls, who were supposed to have met their death in mid ocean should at last arrive safely in port is indeed good news. The Sitka Alaskan contains a Tery interesting account of the dis covery of a vein of coal on the shore of- Ynkutat bay, about two miles from the he.irh. The vein has been prospected and found to dip at au angle of 4 degrees. Forty tacks of the coal were taken out of a five-foot vein, which wid ened as the work proceeded, and the outcropping of the vein wt-rt? 1 found at a distance of 000 !ec-t fro: the discovery siiaft, and again at a mile and a quarter, the indica tions being that the main vein is continuous. The gold mines of Alaska are yielding excellent returns. Very little is said about them, for very little is known, as the mines are actual business propositions and! i.ot merely stock-jobbing schemes ; i but the output of the precious metal is steadily increasing, and new mine3 are being explored and opened every year. It will not be at all strange if Alaska boon takes high rank as one of the gold pro ducing territories of the United States. Frequent allusion has been made o the salmon fisheries of Alaska, and it is enough to say that can neries ate being and have been established at JilTerent places, and that their business compares very favorably with that done anywhere on the coast. Taking these matters into con sideration, together with the other resources of the territory, it will bo seen that the Seward purchase was not a mistake, and that Alaska bids fair to become a very valuable piece of projierty. This is especi ally the case if coal is found there in quantities to warrant working. euuvvu ,n. i w v.. have removeJ their bIacksmith 8hop eyed to tide-Water client) V and trnm their old quartern to tha corner oppo- i T au jutiouaii men skuijiv, wncrc 1889 SPKING AND SUMMER 889 Oil SPECIALTIES- Par h. 1 Dim iinois Furniture House! x.THOS.
