Tie 8oenery Alms the Eastward Exteniiin f the OmOD Pacifio Railroad. Does any one realize that we have, at our very doors, some of the finest scenery to be found on this famous Pacific coast? A few hours ride from Albany upon the Oregon Pacific road, and more hours of sturdy tramping, will place the tourist who is looking lor natural scenery among some of thr; finest that can be found and among the foot hill mountains where the bracing pure air and the ice cold and perfectly pure water will bring beahji and robustness as will no ether tonic or medicine. A party, consisting of homestead house builders and Eastern gentle men taking in the health, beauty and novelty of this coast, recently made tiie trip of this description. a tie Oregon Pacific train landed them at Gates, where the services of pack horses were secured for the commissary department and tramp, tramp the boys are march ing was taken up and after a few miles of "tie walking" the moun tain path was taken for Mountain Home Plateau, where several of the six hundred thousand of Uncle Aoe's boys of the sixties are build ing "Home, sweet home." The 1 enquiry at the foot of the mountain 1 was, now tar : anu tiie answer, "Two miles." Ere long tiie en quirer, while pausing lor breath, asked, "How far?" and the terse reply was, "Half way up." "Yes? well, but we have traveled four miles up already." "But only one mile on the level." A jolly crowd gathered around the bountiful spread table in one j ot the mountain h. mes that night, although some weary limbs felt the effect of the unaccustomed climb ing. A second house on an adjoin ing claim, one halt' mile farther on, was occupied by a party of Eastern gentlemen who had a strong ad miration for the unrivalled Oiegou tall timber that beautified the land scape and made the bright sunlight of midday a pleasant twilight. A good night's sleep induced by the soporic tendencies of the still ness of those primeval sentinels of fir, hemlock, ceda. , spruce and pine which rear their stately heads from two to three hundred feet above our comparatively pigmy but secure and comfortable quarters, rested the tired muscles, after tales of canyons and waterfalls upon l-me oreeK (so called from the fact that for almost its entire length it closely follows a direct south course upon the government survev section line. A trip up it was i i i . . . unueri"Ken uy uie more venture some of the party for the purpose of viewing the beautiful scenery. Climbing up a stream that nai ure has constructed perpendicu lar instead of on a graded level is a feat atterded with considerable fat'gue and even danger, but it was accomplished in due season. Line Creek is almost one continuous series of cascades. In the first mile out 'party encountered two falls that required daring climbing up the sides of the enclosing preci- pices to pass. The ntxt day the precipitous rmir.-e ot M inker creek (shvJes of Noah Webster. where did those people who did the naming ot these beautiful, dear mountain streams study up tiie apellutions they used), was followed down. Near the commencement of Moun- a a. . i lain noine riateau the two main I branches of this creek leap down sheer precipices that the survey field noteu say are over 101) ieet hiirh. One of our partv called it liainbow Falls, because at the time first seen the prismatic rain bow hues filled the sprayed column of water on the rocks below; the other was Christened Shower Bath Falls, because the lower half of the fall was con p e ely broken into spray by the projic ing rocks of tin upper portion, and formed as per fect a shower bath in the pool be low as cculd 1 e asked for. The new route opened by the construction ot the Oregon Pacific presents attractions for the tourists, the pleasure and health seekers, and openings for settlers and busi ness men that are unsurpassed in in any other locality, and need but to be seen to be appreciated. Kurrryiax I'ablle Laad. Secretary Noble has granted the applications of a number of settlers on unsurveyed public lands in Cali fornia, Oregon and Washington territory for a survey of the lands on which they reside. The secre tary has directed that the United states surveyor-general shall invite proposals to survey this land at the rate allowed by act of October 2, 1SS8. There "are vast tracts of timber, agricultural and fruit lands on the line of the Oregon Pacific east of thh vty, which should be surveyed. that portion of the country is fast settling up, and the lands should not remain longer unsurveyed.
