Holuaan of Salem, is at the St. Charles. Mr. Holman is tak ing an order for the new pumps for the city water works. Mm. Wallis Nash and son Per cival has gone to San Francisco, for the health of the latter who has been ill for several years. A lively interest is now being taken in the Santiam mine. This district promises to be a scene of active mining operations in the near future. The graduating class of the Al . b&ny college this year will be com posed of three young ladies : Miss Helen Crawford, Miss Flora Mason and Miss Ina Robertson. A valuable colt, owned by Ubbe Peters, while being driven to a road' cart the other day, reared np and fell backwards, receiving in juries from which it will probably die. Hon. Allen Parker came over from Yaouina yesterday. He savs ! that times are lively at the bay. He attended a picnic with some of the cannerymen there before leaving. Miss Carrie Pfeifler has retuined from California, where she has been spending the winter. Her many friends will be pleased to know that she is much improyed in health. The city election at Eugene Mon day resulted as follows: Mayor, A. G. Hovey ; councilmen, G. B. Dorris, L. N. Roney, and Y7. T: Campbell; recorder, B. F. Dorris ; treasurer, J. C. Gray. Down in Tacouia an excavation was made for a new building, from which 120 loads of dirt was re moved, whereupon the real estate men at once published the same as 120 transfers of real estate made in one week. Frank Tabler, son of Council man B. F. Tabler, who has been sick for several weeks at his lather's residence in this city, has recovered and yesterday started for his home in Montana, where he is engaged in the drug store busi ness! The fire department was out last veiling for regular drill, under direction of Chiel Engineer C. II Stewart and his efficient corps of assistants. Thev had some hall dozen streams playing at once, and It-monstratcd that the Albany fire lewatment can be relied upon in case of tire. Miss Minnie Parker has opened a studio in Flinn's block, and will yive instructions in oil painting, makir a specialty of line land scapes. Shi has some line paint ings of different Oregon scenery, which are beautiful productions of the true artist's brush. Those de siring instructions in fine oil paint ing should call and examine her work, i lrof. C. Krumbein, the well known London artist, who lias been doing some line portraits of noted Oregonians at the state capi tol, is in the city, and will remain for a week or two at the St. Charles hotel. Some ot his pictures have leen on exhibition in the show window of G. L. Blackman, and need no recommendation. Those wishing fine portraits in oil crayon should not neglect to call upon -him. He has executed portraits m the Emperor of Germany und the Queen of England, and many ther notables. W. C. T. V. ELECT!). The following ladies were elected officers for the Wi C. T.- U. for the coming year at their annaul meet ing: President, Mrs. E. F. Sox: "vice-president, Mrs. St. John; re cording secretary, Mrs. E. A. Mc Alister; corresponding secretary, Hrs. M. H. Ellis; treasurer, Mrs. Althouse; organist, Mrs. W. II. Lee. The treasurer reported the receipts for the year $515.80; ex penditures $480.52. The indebted ness on the hall has been reduced $100, and we hope soon to be able to reduce it another $100. Resolved, That the W. C. T. Annual Convention of the Linn .County Tfiachers Institute. THE ADDRESSES LAttT 1VEIX. Programme Tor To-Day and Friday The Topics aad Teachers Who Will Discuss Them. The annual county institute for Linn county convened at the opera house in this city last evening, a large number of teachers being present to hear the opening ad- dresses. This number will be greatly increased to-day when the work of the session will begin. An address of welcome was de livered by Miss Kate Price, of Al bany, who in a happy, pleasant manner extended a cordial wel come to the visiting teachers dur ing their stay in the city. The response was delivered by State Superintendent E. B. McEl roy, who followed with an able ad dress on the subject of the examin tion of teachers. This was followed by an excel lent address by Prof. Thos. Van Scoy on the qualification of teach-' ers. A large audience was present, and the addresses were listened to with marked attention. The day sessions will be held at public school building, school hav ing adjourned for this pur pese. The evening sessions will be held at the opera house. State Superintend ent E. B. McElroy is here and will assist Supt. L. M. Curl in making the institute a success. Mr. Charles Pfeiffer, the well known proprietor of the Revere house, informs us that arrange ments are being made by himself and a few others to erect a. big brick hotel in this city. The site has not yet been definitely located, but the men connected with the enterprise have plenty of money and will spare no pains t' make it what Albany needs, a lirst-class hotel. M, French's. and THE BANTIAH MIXES. A Company Incorporated With a Capitol 8tock ef f 700,000 to Develop Them. Articles of incorporation have been prepared and will be filed this week with the secretary of state, incorporating the Albany Mining and Milling Company. The incorporators are A. B. Woodin, W. F. Read, A. A. Rhodes, Robt. Brown, M. Cowan and B. M Huston. The objects of the com pany are to open, develop and operate the mints situated on the Santiam. The capital stock of the company is placed at 700,000, and the location of the company's office is in this citv. Another company, consisting of Messrs. W. F. Read. A. A. Rhodes, Robt. Brown, A. B. Woodin, B. M. Huston, M. Cowan, Chas. E. Brownell, O. P. Donley, Herbert H. Ames and John McChesney, who own ten different claims in the Santiam district has been organised and they will incorporate and take $350,000 of the capital stock of the first named company, by putting in their mining claims valued at that amount, leaving $350,000 stock to be sold. It it intimated that several Portland capitalists who are interested in there mines will become stock holders in the company and assist in developing the mineo. That good gold and silver quartz mints exist in the Santiam district there is no longer any doubt, and it is only a question of a very short time when an interest which will equal or exceed that of the famous Ceeur d'Alene district will be centered in these mines. This is an important movement toward the opening and development of the mines of this regeon, and it is to be hoped the company will be successful in carrying out the ob jects for which it has been organ ized and incorporated. THIS YEAR'S STATE FAIR President Apperaon Says the Indications Are That It Will Be a Qood One. An Oregon ian reporter met Hon. J. T. Apierson, of Oregon City, president of the Srate Board "of Agriculture, in Portland Tuesday, and questioned him regarding this year's state fair. "There is every indication that we will hold a good fair, one of the best we have eyer had," was his reply. "We contemplate putting up more stables and fences on the ground, and making other improve ments to accommodate those mak ing exhibits. The facilities for holding fairs enlarge each year, as the state grows and increases in wealth, and there is no good rea son why each fair should not be better than the proceeding one." "What is the financial condition of the board?" "Excellent. We have had pros perous fairs for four consecutive years, and our indebtedness is gradually being reduced. When the state board assumed charge of affairs four years ago, the indebted ness amounted to $30,000 ; now it is between $15,000 and $l(i,OC0, a reduction of about one-half." "How will the creation of state board of agriculture in Southern and Eastern Oregon and the hold ing of fairs in those sections of the state alfect you?" "1 think they will be very bene ficial to us. Governor Pen nover to-day commuted the sen tence of "Tuswick," an Iniian, who was sent to the penitentiary for a term of 18 months, from Feb ruary, 1888, on a charge of grand larceny, Wasco county, on recom mendation of the trial judge, the commution to take effect April 4. At 12 o'clock Monday night the Monroe Flouring Mills and grain warehouse burned to the ground. The fire was caused by a lantern falling from the hands of one of the workmen which exploded, the flames catching in the dust and spreading rapidly. Loss about $12,000, and there was about $10. 000 insurance. It was the property of Thos. Samuels, of Corvallis. There was considerable amount of grain in the warehouse. LETTER LIST.
