nesses and spectators. The exam
ination of Dr. Murray occupied
most of the day and she proved a

tion. Wilcox did not take the
stand himself and brought no te6
timony to deny having offered the
1500. His law vers let the case
rest, claiming the $1500 wasoffered
as a retraction. The judge in
structed the jury to the effect that
no matter what crime Mrs. Murray
had committed it cave no one a
right to extort money from her
The case has gone to the jury
The counsel for the prosecution
claim thev must convict Wilcox if
the jury does its duty.

that in the early days ot Oregon,
when the Hudson fiav company
contiolled the commercial ousiuess
ol the northwest coast, with head
quartos at Yancouvir,aud a branch
store at Oregon City, Thomas Mc
Kay, a rn of a Hudson liny man

subsequently became the wile of
the philanthropic Dr. McLonghlin,
went over to Tillamook country on
a trapping expedition, as a her van I
of tiie above named cotnpauy. Iu
his wanderings up and down the
Coast range he found an aged
Indian woman of ihe Tillamook
tribe, who told him that she !'.::d
witnessed the coming ashore ol the
Spaniards, whom tradrion credits
with burying a chest of treasure at
the mouth of the Nt-halc m river.
The woman infoimed McKay
minutely as to the place the treas
ure was buried, and at his impor
tunity went with him and pointed
out the place she had described.
It was a rule of ihe II. B. Co. that
anything captured by a servant of
the company became at mice the
property of the company, and the
officials ot that then all powerful
corporation, learning lhat McKay
had been prospecting for said
treasure, arrested him and subject
ed h;i:i to a rigid examination to
make him iliscUe what he knew
about it. To all Mr questions
