I coald not have had a better day for the ascent it' it had beeo made according to my direction, said Aeronaut Van Taseell, an he stood UDon the suonv side ot the Cliff-Houo yesterday afternoon and shaded his eyes with his hands so that he could the better see the glistening sands ot" the beach and ine crowds ot people who were slowly wending tueir way to whtre a dark object lay upon the ground a lew yards Iroin high water mark. Van Tassell ..Jbad been advertised to ascend iu hh balloon aha drop to tbe tartb by means ot a parachute, ; and the dark object that was attracting so much attention was tbe balloon . . Accompanied by James White side and lo. lowed by a curious throng, the aeronaut proceeded to where the airshio lay. When they bad reached tbe spot from whicn u was proposed to make the ascent. Whiteside's sent a. toy balloon aloft in order to test ' tbr direction of wind currents.' The little red globe ascended several hundred times and ' floated out to eea. It was decided that it would be dan gerous tor Van .TWcll to ascend at that spot, sc the silken bag wad lilted and carried about a half a mile inland, where it was inflated with - gas. While the bag was slowly puffing out with gas. trains were constantly arriving witn people, auu in a remarkable short space of time the bills iu all directions were dotted over with . human figures. The sun was Inning biiglitly ; old oceau was 'as' fruity 1 as a woman's siui ejuLd overhead not a breath of air was t-tiu in. As the aeron aut had I; utiiruiiy bual, he could not have bad a butter day. In a short time ail the gas ou hand had been forced iuio the bal loon, aud while tiii air-ship wa swaying lo aud Ji as thougti ini paticul to be cut loose, it was dis covered that there was not enough oxygen to be had to permit the use ot a basket. With the small amount of yss to be had the bal loon was uot capable cf lifting the est i a weight ol a car. This did not discourtge Van Tassell, how ever, and he , announced that lie would like to make the ascent sitting ou & rope, which, tunned rnU loop, "and hanging located, foruiing 'tolerably com lurtable seat. Whne the b.llcoo without its passenger daited upAurd i.ad floated toward tue Farra!ooe5 the thousands who had watched the ascent held their breath and s'llied the beating of "heir hearts while Van Tass;il dropped tike a shot for a distance oi 200 feet. Then one side of the parachute com menced to spread out,, but it was seen that the professor's legs had become eutacgled iu the ropes in such a manner as to ' prevent the opposite side from.' eo doing like wiae. A roar ot borror arose from the crowd; as fbev saw the man's danger and everybody expected to sec the a-rouaut land upop the ground au unrecognizable mass. Van ; Tassell ' gave a few quick jerks upon bis legs, and when at k height of .about 500 Teet from the ground he succeeded m disenUng ling' bimself. from the ropes. When he had accomplished that, the parachute spread itself nicely ani deceu ed to the ground in safety, Van Tassell landing on his feet as liht as a bird, while the multitude testified their apprecia uon ot bis daring awakening tbe echoes from the hills with their cheers. Vau Tassell was a little pale and said tor a moment he thought be was lost. ' A telephone message received at tbe Merchant' Exchange-at about 5 o'clock from Point Lobos station was to the efleet that the balloon bad fallen into the ocean about eight miles down the coast, off San lJelro point.
