A large number of the native animals of the American continent are fast disappearing. In view of this fact the New York Herald I makes this pathetic appeal: "Many of the animals native and lecnliar to this continent are be coming extinct. The buffalo, lest than twenty yearsago, by its num erous herds, stopped a railroad train on the Western plains. It is now so nearly extinct that it has become a curiosity in menageries. to ascend and expand, jutt as the disdains to profit by the characters and example of others his life will probably be so meager and poor that it will hardly be worth the living. There is nothing n literature more despicable than plagiarism ; yet the author who should on this account cease to read, refuse to obtain information from trustworthy sources, and de cline to onder the thoughts of great thinkers, or to observe the style of fine writers, would soon find that his own volumes were deservedly left without readers. New .thoughts, ideas, aimes, methods, plans are in the air. Whatever in good in them is due from every nation who originates them to every other, from every individual who conceives of them to every other. . What folly tore ject them because they are not original:' The question is not, are they mine or yours or some one else's? Not .are they American or English, French or German, but are they true? Are they good? Are they adapted to our ueeds? True originality, while nobly liv-j ing its own life and disdaining to j copy that of another, is yet thank-: ful for every influence that helps it i Five years ago Western hunteix announced that the last great herd had disappeared. A herd of elk oioe dispersed a California legisla t ire, but this animal is now very rare in that state and is becoming 8 arce all over the country. Tl.e beaver, the moose, the baribuu, the antelope, the mountain sheep, are disappearing fast before trap pers and pot-hunters with "railroad facilities."
