It ripens in this latitude about the 1st of July, and is borne in clusters like cur rants: shape, round; color, reddish uurple at first, but becomes a bluish blactc when fully ripened. As it is right to judge a tree by its fruit, so it is lair to iudge ot aoy undertaking by the results which it can show, and to measure the probability of its ultimate suc cess by the magnitude of tbe task set neiere it. borne statistics re cently compiled and set forth in a recent number of the Fortnightly Review, anord an opportunity to inquire into the actual 'esults of the efforts of missionaries in what it pleases ns to call the heathen lauds; and also to measure with some degree of accuracy the proba bility ot eventual success in con verting "heathendom"to Cl.riitian itv. The best attainable estimate places the "heathen" and Moslem population of Asia and Africa at 920,000,000 or even fifteen times tbe population of the United States Persons who have investigated the subject with great care estimate that the annual increase in this population by the excess of births is not less than twelve per 1000, which would give for the 920,000, 000 an annual increase of 1 1 000. 000. Now the highest estimates which well-informed missionaries p ace upon the number of conver sions and accessions by birth an nually is 60.000, aod it is admitted that of these not a tew relapse into heathenism. But supposing that they a.11 remain steadfast, it will be seen that the increase in Christians is insignificant as compared with the net increase of population by birth. At the rate named it would take 183 years to convert one year's increase. To sta it ii an acother way, lor every auai ioual Ctnbtaiu there are 183 additional heathens and Moslems. I: is evident that, as time goes n, if no oetier pro gress than this is to be made,wb:le the actual number of converts to Christianity in heatbeudom will slowly increase, their relative number, as compared with the totality ol beathyudom, will stead ily and greatly decrease. But it will be argued that this estimate does not take iuto account the fact that converts, and because ot the be.ter life which it causes llieni to lead, many are induced to iol.ow their example. Un fortun ately for this theory, it is by no means borne out by facts. The increase in happiness in a convert does not seem to be sufficiently couspicuous to be observed by the "iie&lucii in bis blindness." Neither does it appear, on the testi mony of the missionaries them &clve9,thai theconvtits as a class do lead oetter lives than hciore cou version. On the contrary, it is noted in a great maLy cases tht they learu European vices much more easily than Cbristaia virtues,, and in far too many cases the fact uecoines apparent that conviction had very much tessto do with con version than the hope of some im mediate advantage to be gained. Upon this question of the quality of tbe converts much evidence is sdouced. A well known African traveler says th.it iu many impor tant districts there the missionaries, after twenty years of work, "can scarcely number, in honest statistics twenty sincere converts. , In other part8,"be continues, "their religion is discredited by numbering among its adherents all the drunkards, liars rogues and unclean livers in the colony." Three years aioce, in a nominally Cnristain village, a quarrel broke out and not a few were killed. Tbe victors cooked and ate bodies of the dead, and as a punishment, tbe pastor of the vil lage, a native announced that they , were "suspended from church pri vileges." And concerning tbe very native pastors, the men so confi dently relied upon to spread tbe Gospel, not only by their preach ing, but by their upright and vir tuous lives, the same traveler says: "With a very few rare exceptions these native pastors, teachers knu catecnists, whom I have met have been all more or less bad men. They attempted to veil an unbridled immorality with an unblushing hypocrisy, and a profane display of mouth religion, woich to an honest mind seemed even more disgusting than immorality itself." A missionary of tbe Church Mis sionary Society in Bengal says : "I must confess that neither reader nor schoolmaster has much in fluence with the people. Both are in the habit of drk-kiDg." Of an other village he says: But it inu-t be remembered that all these are counted as converts in missionary statistics. . It is unnecessary to question the honisty of purpose of tbe vast majority of those who are to day tsuaged in missionary labor. But it ma; fairly be questioned whether their labor is, in the main, of any avail, or whether its fruit, such as it seems to be, is, on the whole good Iruit. The cost is enormous, and tbe return, taking quality, is next to nothing . Unless it can be 8D0WD alter all these years of en i tit-Avar that a eavor, comparatively large proportion ui me icmuvciy siuau numrvr of conversions that have beeu uiaJe bcuehlted the converts. made them happier and better, and til is cafe to look upon the jeuicii'iiae as a faiiur.
