Yet it cannot be denied that such is the absolute lace Tne Uhautauquan argues that the adoption of gunpowder masks a distinct advance in the progress of man; for, with the obvious exception of heat,, it was the first instance in which' man bent a subtle and invisible force to do his work, and he thereby greatly enhanced his own power. How great this gain is may best be realized when we learn that a pound of gunpowder is theoretical ly capable of doing 480 foot tons of work or exerting 32.0 horse-power, and that as a modern high-powir gun requires for each charge 8C0 ) ou nd of powder, the theoretical eliciency of its charge is 27,710 horse-power. Only a civilized people could construct and properly employ so enormous and yet nice a weapon ; and it is not surprising that the races who posses it should maintain their supremacy. With the present century there came a fresh development in explosives and this time the discoveries re sulted during the study of the science of chemistry, one o: the sciences which had grown up under the freedom which gunpowder had brought. In 1800 Howard discov ered mercury fulminate, in 1845 j Schonbeia discovered guncotton, j in lS4t Sobrero discovered nitrr glycerine, in i860 Nobel discovered j dynamite, and since then, espec-1 ially uuring the last decade, there j hive been discovered or devised a great number of explosive com pounds or mixtures. Eacli ot those mentioned is vastly more iover-; ful than gun-powder, but thus far j they have played little or no part j in war. However, the knowledge j j which has been gained of thei r j H proierties and the progress which has been made in applying especially as charges for shell, lead to the belief that they will be used with great effect in future wais and will cause a revolution in the Thb building and improvements in Albany during the year 1889 p mise to exceed tlia: of any p 'dvious year. The frnit crop in Oregon will in future years form an impoitant factor in the marketable products of the countrv. Albany's city boundaries will be extended during the present year to make room for the city's in creasing population. An amend ment to amend the city charter for this purpose will be presented at the coming session of the legislature. WELLS, RICH A It D SON Co. Proprietor BURLINGTON, VERMONT.
