Oreonian, j it lias been known for several days that negotiations looking i toward the settlement of Con ! tractor (r. W. Hunt's suit against i the Oregon Paeitic railroad were pending. The law firm of YYil l;ams t Wood, conducted toe ne gotiations for their client, Mr. Hunt, while Whalley, Pronaugh oc Nortiiuji looked out for the inter ests of the Oregon Pacific. Thursday the compromise was ejected. Mr. Hunt accepts a check for .fuO.Ossii for his claim against the ('oinpany and another f r $.jU7;J to cover the costs of the suit. Both are drawn on tiie banking firm of Ladd 0c Tilton and bear the signature of Hamilton, Job & Co., of Corvallis. .-uu-r .ut. num. annuaou luscon tract with the Oregon Pacific last winter, the compromise began suit against him in Albany for $100, He defended the srit and was recently awarded judgment for $76,0 0. He has consented to settle tor $(10,000. That is more (baa the work amounted to. It wa worth .about f jl',000. After tiie Oregon Pacific liad ti'ed suit against Mr. Hunt at Albany lie be gan another suit in tiie state cir cuit court in Portland for $100,000, of which $80,000 was claimed for work and $SO,000 for damages. This suit has been transferred to the United States circuit court, Mr. Hunt having become a citizen of Ohio. The probabilities are that this suit will be dismissed, now that a settlement has been made. HISTORY Of THE LITIGATION. A little history of this litigation might be ot interest at this time. Mr. Hunt held the contract to 'mild fifty miles of the Oregon Pa cific line, beginning at a point forty miles east of Albany. Nel son Bennett's contract called for the building of the forty miles be tween Albany and tiie western end of Mr. Hunt's work. On the BJtli of last December both contractors annuled their agreement, discharged their men and suspended work. Mr. Hunt said that he had taken this course because he had received no money lor four months and could get no satisfaction from the company as to when he would be paid; that lie had been dealt with unfairly. Both gentlemen stated tliey were in duced to take the contract from the, company on the positive assurance that it had $2,000,0; 10 in the treas ury; with $S,00J;Ou0 more availa ble ; that it hud 100 miles of steel rails in Francisco. On the 20th of December, Mr. Bennett set the legal ball in mo- tion by suing the Oregon Pacific in the state circuit court in Port land, for $551, s2o, of which $201, S25 w is claimed as balance due for work performed, $ 150,00 J for de creased valuation of his plant, by reason of the abandonment of the contract and $200,000 for damages. Mr. Hunt followed by instituting suit lor $100,000. Mr. Bennett's suit is still pending in part 1 state circuit court. In connection with the Hunt set tlement it was stated that steps were being taken to compromise the Bennett suit. Following is a complete list of!
