FOR 1'KKSiDEXT, BEX.IA.MIX HARRISON, OF INDIANA. FOR VICE-PRESIDENT, LEVI P . MORTON , OF NEW YORK. FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELKCTOP.S ROBERT M'l.EAN, W.M. KAPL'S C. W. . 'I.TON. TUB FARMERS BENEFIT. The question for the tiller of the soil, the producers of this country, to consider in connection with the tariff discussion is whether it is preferable to have a home market for products, or reach out for foreign markets to the detriment of home markets. Ninety-two per cent of our products are now con sumed at home, which is the direct outcome of our large manufactur ing growth. Can any one be so blind as not to be able to compr hend the advantages of a market lor his products at his own door? Can any one be so biased by party prejudices as to close his eyes to lis own personal interests? Nathaniel Paige of Washington, who has just returned from Eng land, says: "The farraeis here, if thejy do not see the advantages of protection, are surely misinformed. Is it not better for them to sell thejr produce in markets like Chicago and other cities in the 'Union than to ship it to Liverpool? They get more for it at home, be cause there is an active demand ; but once free trade obtains a hold, the maket is destroyed and the Liverpool merchants have us at their mere v." The factory at our own doois and by our own countrymen creates the home market ior our products, keeps the money in our own country and also keeps that money in constant circulation, while the factory transplanted to a foreign country destroys the home market for our products, sends the money out of the country for manufactured articles, and consequently removes the money entirely from circula tion, making hard times. Thise 'iro irtfta fnr tlit fillers ff tilf Sfiil to take into consideration when deciding what policy the govern ment shall be run under for the next four years, when they cast their votes the )th of next month. Practically it matters very little whether the presidents name is Harrison or Cleveland, but to tbe welfare of the country it does mat ter very materially whether we continue to improve our home martlets and home manufactures, or whether we adopt a system tbat goes; searching alter a mythical foreign market that hard experience lias already taught us cannot be found, for the increase of impoita tions has never brought us the wished for increase of exportations, but rather the reverse. Fresider.t Fillmore, in his message in 1S51, w nen rue tree iraue tann was in operation, says: "It was hoped that our low tariff with heavy importations of foreign goods wui d have increased the foivign demand ior our provisions and surplus farm products, but instead of doing so our exports have fallen from GS,- iii,".'l :u to yj-.)i ,j,o in 1S50 and to ?21,S4S,G-":3 in 1S51, with every prospect of falling lower lining l2; and while it was be lieved that a low duty would increase the foreign demand and raise tje price of our surplus pro ducts, the result proves that a low duty did not produce any such effect." If a vote for Mr. Clevc- I land means a change in the policy of the government to bring about the.-e results, and Mr. Cleveland has plainly put himself in tiie position that means that alone, then the tillers of the soil should very carefully consider the ques tion, for casting a vote for him is most certainly voting against their best interests and for a course that will eventually result i'i their great harm. MORE IV? E TRADE RUUDISH. The Evening Democrat ful minates the following: "By the senate tariff bill the tax on lumber is retained, and that on wire for fencing is increased. These are articles of prime need to our farm ers. How can western congress men stand before their constituents and advocate, or defend, such measures? There is no sentiment involved. It is a matter o: dollars and the bill, in these particulars, is in direct conflict with the interests 01 our larmers. A tnorougn search of the treasury department report upon im ported rgoods for the last three years ending with June 30 1SS7, fails to reveal a single pound of barbed wire fence ma terial imnorted into this country. We mention this fact to show the entirely dishonest and specious arguments of the Democrat editor, and not establish the fact as tr: argument in the case, for no matter how much fence wire was imported, as has already been repeatedly shown, the claim that the tariff is added to the price of the article as sold here is a bare faced falsehood, no matter who first told it, and it was not the Democrat editor fcr he only parrots over statements that are stale, and knows them to be false in this instance for he knows that barbed wire for fencing is an American invention and manufactured in this country. The inferences of the above quotation, if carried out, would transplant all manufactures into foreign countries-. Democrats nor no other American citizens are blind enough to want any such act accomplished, but these would be Democratic leaden are willing to talk anything even to ac mplish any act to establish the prospects of party success. .: i!
