In following out his honest con victions, Mr. Patrick Ford has seen fit to advocate the side of protec tion to American labor in the present campaign, in the columns of the Irish World of which he i editor. Instead of attempting t answer his argument, the demo cratic and mugwump managers have attacked Mr. Ford's private character with the most foul and f ilse calumnies. In answering and showing up the inwardness of these slanderous attacks Mr. Ford gives a full reputation, and in the course of his article in last week's "World says : "If I am conscious of my own identity all these al'egations are false as the motive underlying their invention is malevolent. Nevertheless, I shall not undertake to answer these allegations, for to do so would be to play into the hands of the enemy, whose object is to create a diversion from the economic question before the coun try. All who know me knows these things are lies the very men who circulate them know them to be lies. But suppose . these things were true as they are false, hat then? What lias my personal character to do what has anv man's personal character to dc with the question of the tariff ? It" my life were a; spotless as that the angel Gabriel that fact, of it.- eK would not prove the sr u nlness of t!ie protective policy, ncr of itself would it disprove the arguments a lvanced for the negative side of the question. -All that I have done in this campaign has been to argue in favor of the retention of the protective system. I may be mistaken in my views, but if so, calling me vile names certainly does not convince me of my error, but rather confirms me in an opinion reached by careiul studv and dispassionate observation." The German doctors accuse the English Dr. McKenzie with having shortened Emperor Frederick's life by his treatment. Dr. McKen zie replies in his book fully show ing that the German doc-tors subtracted ten months from th Emperor's life. And so it goes, and poor humanity have to sub mit to the doctors. The Chronicle says: A contem porary asks, Where are the ships? and furnishes an untrue answer to its own question. It says they have been driven from the ocean by a high tariff. This is not true. They have been driven from the ocean because, like senseless men, we have refused to extend to them the protection of decent navigation laws and subsidies. Had we done so. the ocean shipping trade, like the protected industries of the country, would have prospered. STATE COLLEGE, COKVAI.I.IS, OREGOX. Term Commences on V'IiK'sd;ij , s'ltciij"M'r K ISSS.
