Uolvertun member ot the state ! central committee. JUr. Fulton prefaced his remarks by saying ; that Linn county was "the "lirst j place he commenced his Oregon j life, and expressed great pleasure j m noting. the rapid progress that! the county and city of Albany had j made in the thirteen years since i ne hist visited it. His speech was j confined principally to the supreme i ! issue betore the people, the tariff j question. He engaged in no I flights oi oratory, but talked fluent ly lor about an hour, dea'ing n stubborn tas and arguments. In the co'iVse of his speech le reierred to the enterprise of the people of Spokane Falls in build ing up that city. He said the peo ple there are so enterprising and public spirited that they will not send abroad for anything that can be manufactured" in their own town, which accounts for their great prosperity and extraordinary jiiovti:;. nesaiu inni recently ai cracker lactory was started there. A merchant tried to sell a box of Portland crackers to a customer. He looked at them and said, N'o, these are not Spokane crackers." The merchant then said they were a great deal better than ftpokaue crackers. The customer replied that he did not care for that, he lived in Spokane and wouldn't have any but Spokane crackers. That system of buying at home will build up any town, and it will build up a nation. In referring to the main issue, the raising of revenue by tarill', he established the fact, that a tarill' for revenue, such as the English now have and the democratic partv is working for was practically tree trade. Any tariff that does nut protect is practically free trade. He showed on. 1 isi'ely that Un democratic party is utterly op posed to protection. His illustration of the matter of wages, if foreign manufaciurit s iuiojjeuu SLUii'iuiu, was Complete and convincing. The democratic i cry against the rich, robber manu-' tac.urers growing rich from tariff taxation, and then admitting wool free, which was solely for their benefit and against the "producing classes, was shown up in all its f:llsitV. This exhibits the pitiful igno rance and wonderfully small canore of the uneducated scribbler of the Democrat, when compared with j the following at least gentlemanly relerence to his tpeeches in South ern Oregon, from the Jacksonville Times (democratic) : "C. W. Fulton, republican can didate for presidential elector, ad dressed a small audience at the U. Samuel ju. i olnu. m ill 's-'.i Tin ' fof , m Ulll": I AT lAO.ll VI. The New Steamers for the Line to 'Frisco The Propcred New Jetty. C. H. Hasweil, Jr., general freight and passenger agent of the Oregon Development Co., with headquarters in San Francisco, has been iu the city for a day or two on business connected with his com pany. This line of steamers has been ciippled somewhat by the wreck ing of the Yaquina City, and the loss of the use of another steamer through some litigation, but new boats are soon to be put on the route. One of these, formerly known as the Caracas, now to be called the Yaquina Bay, sailed from New York on October 1, and as soon as she arrives will enter into the service on this line. The company has purchased another vessel, which will also be put on the route soon, making a line of steamers sufficient to carry the traflic offering in much shorter time. The appropriation by congress for the improvement of the Ya quina harbor is $1")0.000, $10,000 of which has already been re ceived, and the government work is now being prosecuted. The gap torn in the unfinished work on the jetty on south beach by the tides of last winter has been re built, and it is now proposed to construct a new jetty on the north beach. This jetty Is expected to greatly increase the benefits of the work already done, as it will con line the water of the channel and still furtlrer deepen it, and carry away the sand spit inside the bay. It will begin near the bluff around the point from Newport and extend toward the sea as shown in the ac companying illustration, which is tiken from the north jetty ami shoAS the steamer entering the harbor. No tug is visible "as the steamers come and go at Yaquina without the expense of any tow age, although the company has two good tugs at the bay. Yaquina harbor has become one of the important shipping ports of the coast, and when viewed in the light of the increased amount to be expended in its improvement during the next year, it is not dif ficult to see that the volume of bus:ness which willhe done through Albany and oyer this route will be a steadily increasing quantity. 6 WILL BROS Dealers in all the leading Guns, Pistols, Sewing Machines, Organs.
