The New Steamers for the Line to 'Frisco
The Propcred New Jetty.
C. H. Hasweil, Jr., general
freight and passenger agent of the
Oregon Development Co., with
headquarters in San Francisco, has
been iu the city for a day or two on
business connected with his com
pany. This line of steamers has been
ciippled somewhat by the wreck
ing of the Yaquina City, and the
loss of the use of another steamer
through some litigation, but new
boats are soon to be put on the
route. One of these, formerly
known as the Caracas, now to be
called the Yaquina Bay, sailed
from New York on October 1, and
as soon as she arrives will enter
into the service on this line. The
company has purchased another
vessel, which will also be put on
the route soon, making a line of
steamers sufficient to carry the
traflic offering in much shorter
time.
The appropriation by congress
for the improvement of the Ya
quina harbor is $1")0.000, $10,000
of which has already been re
ceived, and the government work
is now being prosecuted. The
gap torn in the unfinished work on
the jetty on south beach by the
tides of last winter has been re
built, and it is now proposed to
construct a new jetty on the north
beach. This jetty Is expected to
greatly increase the benefits of the
work already done, as it will con
line the water of the channel and
still furtlrer deepen it, and carry
away the sand spit inside the bay.
It will begin near the bluff around
the point from Newport and extend
toward the sea as shown in the ac
companying illustration, which is

harbor. No tug is visible "as the
steamers come and go at Yaquina
without the expense of any tow
age, although the company has
two good tugs at the bay.
Yaquina harbor has become one
of the important shipping ports of
the coast, and when viewed in the
light of the increased amount to
be expended in its improvement
during the next year, it is not dif
ficult to see that the volume of
bus:ness which willhe done through
Albany and oyer this route will be
a steadily increasing quantity.
