A -rirl inserted an advertisement in the Herald Friday for a position fi general housework, and before noon hail received twenty applica tions for her services. The moral is plain. It pays to advertise in a paper which everybody reads. Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Grannan, of San Francisco, are visiting Mis. Grannan's mother, Mrs. E. K. Cheadle, in this city. Mr. Gran nan is recently from Auckland, New Zealand, and brought with him a cabinet of specimens that would do credit to a museum. Julius Gradrtohl writes from San Francisco that he has made ar rangements to buy goods dirett from England. He also shipjed on the last steamer which left for Yaquina City to Albany 100 dozen each of cups and saucers, the very latest style, which he will sell for 75 cents per dozen, for net cash until further notice. While attention is being given to the gold and silver mines of Linn county, some efforts ae also being made to turn to practical use some of the coal deposits which ?ve known to exist et'sc of this city. Richard Watkins and some other men from Lebanon spent a few days last we:k at work on their co.i I mine, nine miles from that place. They brought or.t about ;j R pounds of coal witn them, and sent 100 pounds to Lebanon and Si-io. Mr. Watkins ued some of it in his shop, and it burned well, lie exhibited some irons he had welded togethor, and he can do as good work with it, seemingly, as any other, They say they "only went three feet into the lead, and that it is about fjur feet thick. Prospects are also very favorable at the Donaca and Ilea-ing mine, 2o miles from Lebanon. Some specimens of coal from these mines have been brought to this city, and it is pronounced by experts to be a fine qualitv. It is only a qui ;tion of time when these coai deposits will be developed and turned into a valuable industrv. Strike in the Santi.-im. Word was received in this city last night that another valuable strike had been made in the Capi tal mine, in the Santinm. The news was brought by one of the workmen who has been engaged in sinking the shaft, who quit work, and who left Thursday morning. The shaft has been sunk in the ti'nnel alongside the main lead. '1 .to shifts of men have been em p'oyed day and night, with a pump, and the tunnel has now reached a depth of 22 feet. Wed nesday evening the lead was pene trated four inches, and according to the report, very rich black ore was disclosed. This is the very richest kind of ore, and if it is actually true that it has been found the future of the Capital mine is assured. Several days since, before the s rike, Supt. Anglin wrote for President Wright, and told him to ; ome up, intimating that important developments were expected. A quantity of the ore is said to be at Mehama now, on its way to Mr. Wright, by whom it will probably be received to-day. The directors of the mine think that while the richness of the find is probably exaggerated, a valuable strike has ?en made, and oia. that will realize well for the mine. Salem Statesman. PeMy sneak Thieves. Last Friday night some sneak thieves entered the hardware store of Miller & Cruson at Lebanon ami stole a Smith & Wesson ,"S calibre revolver and some knives, etc. ; also about the same time a bucket of candy from Beard & Yates drug store and a box of forty-eight pack ages of cigarettes from Ben Barker. A small boy traded one of the stolen knives to Mr. Barker; the revolver was brought back Wed nesday night and laid at the door of the hardware store. The offi cers are' on the track of the other stolen articles, and they will no doubt soon be brought in. Leban on Express. Yesterday s Horse Race The horse race at the fair grounds near this city yesterday between the horses of J. P. Keeney, of Brownsville, and Geo. Arehart, of Shedd, was attended by a great crowd. It was a 500-yard single dash, and it resulted in a tie, the stakes being drawn down. Sub s iqiiently a free for all race, in which six horses entered, was run for a purse of $15. It was won by J. B. Keeney's horse, Plovvboy. Change in Time. A slight change in time has been made on the O. & C. railroad. Be ginning to-day the north-bound overland train will arrive 0:25, in stead of 6:45, being twenty min utes earlier than before. Trains on the Lebanon branch will depart ten minutes later than heretofore. Knsiness Firm Yesterday was the liveliest day in this city for many months. Busi ness men say the volume of busi ness yesterday was a gratifying iudex of brisk times this fall. Toe press en dorse it most highly as the repre sentative drama ol humanity, and predict for it a universal success, io give this great play effect, the managers have sin rounded it with au elaborate amount of scenery, in lact more than is carried by any traveling company in America, and what is more to the point, guarantee to produce every scene on our stage the same as at San Francisco. Owing to the enor mous expense attached to this production they play in only a tew towns between 'Frisco and Port land, from which place they go direct to New York City in their special tram for au indefinite period. The citizens of Albany should feel honored at being se lected as one of the limited num ber of stopping places by this truly meritorious company, and the managers and stockholders of the opera house should be congratu lated on their enterprise in secur ing tliem, and our .citizens should show their appreciation by bestow ing a liberal patronage. Mr. Chas. Maubury is one of our greatest American actors possess ing a maul- form, a handsome face and a spirited style of acting, also possessing the pleasant, romantic style of Frank May and coupled with the great force that character ized the late John MeCullough, he has been lionized by the entire New York and San Francisco paptrs who have adjudged him the apollo of sensation actors. Miss Nellie Boyd is too well known here to need comment, fche is always as welcome as the flowers as . p ing, as we remem ber how on wrmer visits we were led unconsciously by the hand of tiiis accomplished and clever lady through the part essayed, how she made us laugh or cry at will. Pugh, fell in the fire at Elder Shea's, near Craw fordsville, v id was burned severe ly about the arms. She and her mother were on their way home from the soda springs, and stopped at Mr. Shea's to get shelter from the rain, and while there met with the accident. Sent Tor Six Days. Wm. Green, a young man ar rested for being drnnk and dis orderly and disturbing the Salva tion Army was arraigned before Kecorder Henton yesterday. He was fined $10 and costs, and in the absence of .he necessary cash he was incarcerated in the city jail for a term of six days. Slayins Deer. It is said that 100 deer have re cently been killed at the Donaca crossing on the Santiam near Crawfordsville. I., at which time were found the pen cilled words, "Carl Myers; met our deaths in the clouds"' Madame Charlotte, who made the balloon ascension yesterday, says: "On the 20th inst. Leon A. "Dare and Carlotta, wife of Carl Myers, were to have had a balloon racefnm Syracuse, and yesterday Carlotta was to have made an ascension from Lockport. The name found on the lost balloon is, that of my manager, Carl Myers. I cannot believe that Carlotta or" Dare are hurt, though they may be. 1 have not heard anything in relation to the matter, which makes me think it can be neither of them. The oflicial report of crops shows the corn yield to be' 00, 4:10,000 hectolietrs, against 112,450,000 hectoliters in 1SS7. ACCUSED OF MALPRACTICE. Brussels, ept. 29. The Inde pendence Beige says Dr. MacKen zie is coining back in reply to his German rivals and will cite articles which the doctor says will prove that had he instead of the German physicians attended the late Em peror Frederick from the begin ning of his sickness, the emperor's life would have been prolonged 20 months.
