As the north bound overland passenger train was Hearing the depot at Shedd yesterday morning a tew mimutes alter six o'clock it ran into the rear of a freight train standing on the nniu track. It was quite foggy, and the freight train could not be seen by the engineer, but just why the treight train should be standing on the main track is only explained by the statement that the overland tiain was a few minutes early. The engine of the overland train was knocked from the track, and a as completely wrecked. The c ilooseon the rear of the freight train was knocked into kindling wood, and nearly every freight car of the long train was more or less damaged. Fortunately no one was hurt, although the passengers were badiy shaken up. The freight engine was attached to the pas senger rain which was taken on to Portland on regular time. A tniing )ltlier's Suicide. Monday afternoon, at her home near Canby, Clackamas county, and about two and a half miles from Auorora. Mrs. "Doc" liar low shot herself in the head with a shotgun, inflicting instant death. The maiden name of Mrs. Barlow was Sarah Knight, and she was a daughter of Adam Knight, of Canby, and a niece of John Knight, of Salem. She was aged about 2o, and left four little children, the youngest about five weeks old. The deed was committed in the pres ence of the little ones. It is not known that the suicide had anv trouble of any kind, and the causes that led to the rash act are a nystery to her acquaintances. 'Doc" Barlow, the husband, is a respectable farmer, and so far as known his relations with Ids wile were not such as to give anv reason for the deed. Fifth Ah n iiul t aiivcnlioii. Lewis E. Lee, Win. H. Cowan, A. V. Thompson and D. (). Wood worth expect to start to-day for Seattle as delegates to the annual convention ot the loung Men's Christian Association, at which place the convention meets on the '1?A, the two former going from the Albany collegiate institute. About twenty-five are expected from the associations of Portland, East Portland and the college branches ot the Willamette valley. A con ference of the general secretaries of Oresron, Washington and British Columbia will meet at Tacoma Wednesday, the 19th. Mr. C. S. Mason, stat secretary of Califor nia, Mr. T. A. Harding, of Wash ington, D. C, and Mr. Noel Jacks, of San Francisco, will attend the convention as visitors. The Injured Italian. The Yaouina Post savs : The two Italians who were injured by the recent blast on the Oregon Pa cific, and who are now in the com pany's hospital at Yaquina City, are now on a sure road to recovery. Neither will lose his eye-sight as anticipated. When the doctor opened the eyelids of the one ap parently made blind and he could see as well as any one, the poor fellow cried like a child, and could not offer to do enough for the doctor. Illuminated by tllretrieity. Oregon City is to be lighted by electricity within thirty days. The poles are all up and nicely painted. The dynamo which is to supply the electricty for the incandescent lamps is situated in the rear of the Imperial mill. It has been tested, and worked satisfactorily. The main streets ami principal busi- j ness fiouses will all be lighted, and Oregon City will be on a par with other places of importance in this respect. .Naughty Pugilists. A Herald reporter was shown a dispatch last night from Salem arranging the preliminaries for a prize fight to occur in this city be tween C. Scott Stokes and a Salem amateur slugger, The match is to be fought with hard gloves for $100 a side. Agent C. G. Rawlings is now in stalled in the neat office built by the O. R. & N. Anderson's mother, an aged hit! v of seventy, is reported quite sick. Mrs. Isabel Hendee and children left for F.a.-t Portland on Saturday ast. Mrs. Mollie Hyde is making preparations to return to her home in irant county. A large caravan of Indians passed through to town Sunday, bound for the hop yards. M Fuller left on Saturday morn ing's train to attend a K. of L. meeting at Oregon City. Kev. Lewiston of the M. E. church preached his first sermon in the white church on Sunday, the 16th inst. Harrisburg is a temperance town, but has a first-cHss private gam bling den, where the young sports spend their idle time. II. A. Davis' hop kiln is ap proaching completion. It is large and commodious, with two drying floors, being complete in every de tail. A few evenings since the freight train ran into a cow at the Smith street crossing, breaking her leg. This accident was due to the care lessness of the engineer, as no alarm was given. J. M. Smith and son, lessees of the Alex. Wilson farm, nine miles east of Harrisburg, have this season harvested about 10,000 bushels of grain. Taking into consideration the fact that this place is looked upon as a stock farm, such a grain yield is doing pretty well. , Jas. Steele, of Portland, came hip on last Friday evening with Mr. A. K. Norwood, who has for sev eral years had leased the large stock farm belonging to Mr. Steele, but recently this large tract of lard, lying about ten miles east of Harrisburg, has been disposed of to a joint stock company, Mr. S. retaining an interest. The com pany propose to improve and stock the farm under the management ol Mr. Nor wood, to whom goes a share of the profits. Small-H at McMinnville. A demoralizing state of affairs exists at McMinnville over the spread of small-pox. A number of new cases have been reported, and the town is nearly depopulated. Dozens of families have left, many business houses are closed and the proprietors are taking a vacation. The greatest cares is being exer cised to prevent a further spread. A pesthouse is built out of town, the three patients have been placed therein, and exposed parties are kept under strict surveillance. The Mury is There. The Democrat says that Messrs. Curran it Monteith have backed down in their offer to wager $1000 on Harrison. Mr. Monteitn states that this is wholly incorrect, as the $1000 in cold hard cash remains in their safe awaiting am- one who desires to cover it with the money, but it will not be put up against any such paper as Ike Hyman, of an Francisco, put up and after wards drew down. III Picking. The light rain of Saturday and Sunday interfered somewhat with hop picking, but yesterday it had become sufficiently dry to enable work to be resumed, anil the yards are all a scene of activity again. It must be remembered that only half of the mill is be:ng run at present, and the result is more than satisfactory. Coos Bay News. Senator Dolpii has been notified by the postmaster-general that a mail service twice a week from Fossil aud Wagner to Monument will be put on October 1, and that the service be increased to six times a week from North Yam hill to Hobofren. DEATH OF CITIZEN, Owen Ridgeway, a former resi dent of Lebanon, was buried here at the home of his birth yesterday. A large number attended" the buri al. He leaves a wife but no chil dren. The settlers on Upper Oehoeo say that foreign sheep owners have eaten all the grass on the ranges surrounding their places, and they are compelled to gather their stock and put them in fields to prevent their starving. House Burned. On Friday night, August 31st, the residence of S. S. Prown, oi Willow Creek, was destroyed by fire with all its contents.
