Maine, Sr., aiet with a very peculiar experience. He was working near J. J. Du bruille's harness shop, at carpenter work,and hung his vest upon a nail close by. A short time thereafter on looking for the vest it could not be found. A thorough search re vealed it under the walk, but when recovered a thirty dollar watch and a box of medicine were missing. The thief failed to find quite a sum of money in the inside pocket. No clue to the perpetrator was found. Kin Offer. Quite a number of men and boys wjere engaged yesterday to go to Seattle for the purpose of picking hbps, at an offer of $1 per box and fare both ways. The offer, how ever, was not so much thought of when it was learned that the hop boxes on the sound were twice the size of boxes in this vh-inity. Claughton, of Che halis county, W. T., formerly deputy sheriff of this county, ar rived in Portland Fiiday from San Francisco, having in charge two prisoners named William Dunlap and James Bartlett. They are wanted at Chehalis to answer to the charge of larceny, which con sisted of breaking into a jewelry store and taking therefrom a lot of jewelry. They escaped to San Francisco, where they were ar lested. Most of the jewelry was recovered. Fine Acting. The Juvenile opera company played yesterday afternoon and last evening to large li juses and gave excellent satisfaction by their tine and perfect acting. Their parts are well sustained and the music vocal and instiumental is fine, They were the recipients of many encores, and the audience was reallv delighted. Telegraph 'nil-lei. The Lebanon telegraph line was connected yesterday with the Postal company's office in this city, and was found in excellent working condition, and ready for business. A terrific explosion occurred at. the Mills of the National Milling Company early thi- morning- Ihe miil took tiro and was entirely destroyed. I.o-s, 150,000; insurance, $75,Odsi. There wen; eighteen men in the mill at the time. Peter Gierman perished in the flame, and four others are seriously injured. Six escaped without injniy, and the others are unaccounted for.
