Soag asd A. Hackleaaa Eetarn frcin a Trip Over the Road Eastward Win. 31. Iloag. vice-prcsiueut and general manager o the Oregon Pacific railroad, and Abe llakie lnan, one oi the directors of the road, returned yesterdav from a j several day's trip along the route I oi tiie road now in process oi con j siruction. They went on a special train to the end of the track, and j there were met by a team, by j which thev were conveved to the end of the wagon road, and they then took saddle horses ami went to the front, or to the camp of Chief Engineer Eckleson, auout twenty miles this side ot the sum mit, where a force of surveyors are at work. About 1000 men are now at work on the road, and the construction is being rapidiy pushed all along the line. About four miles of track has been laid. Workmen have commenced on the bridge across 'he north fork of Santiam. This structure is beinsj built at a natural location for a bridge, there being a solid rock in the middle of the river above high water mark, which will serve as a pier, greatly reducing the cost of the bridge, as no piers will have to be built. Air. Hoag was well pleased with the active appearance of things along the line of the road, and hopes to see the road completed to Fox Valley within thirty days. On their return Mr. Hoag started at once to Corvallis, where the con tract for the only tunnel this side of the summit will be let. The trip was a rough one after leaving the end of the track, a portion of it being made over a trail not now admissable to travel with wagons, some of the finest bodies of timber on the coast are to be found along the route, and already several saw mills have been put in lower down, which will convert some of it into lumber. It is evident that the Oregon Pacific means business from this time forward and. its ultimate connection with the Chi cago & Northwestern at Boise City. and the tapping of the great agri- j cultural and wool producing region ! oi Eastern Oregon will be only a question of a very short time. This is certainly destined to cause an immense trade which now goes northward to flow into Albany, and will be a consummation devoutly to be wished. The Tbrce Sinter. The following is taken from a Portland paper of Tuesday last: "The steamer -Three Sisters lies upon the ways of the Willamette Shipbuilding Company's yawl in East Portland, and is being made over into almost a new boat. Her length has been increased tWenty feet, and an entire new bottom given her. A new steel shaft comes from Pittsburg, and a new w heel is now being made. Her carrying capacity will be increased from 125 to 200 tons. She is being repainted and refitted throughout, and her draft will be about fourteen inches, or some six inches less than form erly. Capt. W. 1. Short says that she wili have the lightest draft of any boat on the river, and he thinks she can ply upon the upper Willamette the year round with out any trouble. He expects to have the repairs all done in three weeks." Vaqaina Harbor Improvement. Arrangements are be rapidly consummated for the beginning of the harbor improvement once more. Tilings are bustling about the office of Engineer Polhemus, the tools and machinery are being unhoused and everything put in readiness for active operations. It is supposed that work will be com menced in earnest about next week. Men are already engaged at the stone (marry and before long the huge barges of rock wi'l again be coming down the bay. The government is negotiating for a lease from the City of Newport for the water front property in front of the Ocean House for the purpose of erecting wharves etc., for the beginning of work upon the North jetty. The prospects are good for lively times on the bay thi winter. Newport News. A fine assortment of heavily plated knives, fork. and spoons at V M. French's, "The Corner Jewehy Store." It seems that the salmon fisher men ul Yaquina are determined not to be behind some of our larger places and have inaugurated a fish ery squabble of their own,or ii j th--r wordsare on a strike. A gentle man from Yaquina CUy states that about 1"0 uni 'ii fishermen have demanded an advance from 2 and -., cents per pound to .'5!-j 'cents for salmon delivered at the can neries, and refuse to work for any less. This the canneries have thus far -refused to pay, and as a- result iint two boats were out Thursday night and only a pott ion of the list l caught were disposed of to the canneries. The salmon run is now brisk and valuable time is being lost over the strike. Unless it is speedily settled the run promises to be materially curtailed. Serious Runaway Accident. On Tuesday morning Mr. Mike Connolly met with a serious runa way accident at the place of Mr. A. Kees, about two miles from Lebanon. Messrs. Connolly and Kees are neighbors, and were en gaged in baling hay at Mr. Kees' pKce when the runaway occurred. Mr. Connolly was hauling hay to the press, and after unloading went to take his lines, but acci dentally dropped one, and leaning over to get it, fell on the double trees, which scared the horses and caused them to run away. He was dragged over 200 yard3 an4 was bruised in a terrible manner, but will probably recover. After urouse. A party of half a dozen hunters left this city last evening with guns loaded for grouse. As the party contained a county judge and a member of the supreme bench, it is safe to say that there will be little danger of prosecution if any of them should mistake a Chinese pheasant for a grouse, or should scare any of the long-tailed birds to death against a barbed wire fence. This, by the way, is the most approved way of captur ing them in Linn county. They Waal Further Information. Some of the wheat buyers of the city were interested in the recent remarks of the Democrat's man about town on "buyer the season" wheat and the relation of the same in San Francisco to the price in this city. They are thinking of asking the man about town for a scientific dissertation upon the' subject: Nearly Burned. On Tuesday the warehouse of R. N. Wilkinson at Wells, Benton county, caught on fire from a spark from a passing locomotive, and after vigorous efforts the flames were put out. A hole of about twenty feet was burned in the roof. The Lebanon Telegraph Line. The telegraph line between this city and Lebanon will be ready for use in a few days, the work of stringing the wires being now in progress. The office in this city will be located in the Postal Tele graph Go's office. Keiaruftd to Albany. M. J. Monteith and wife have removed from ludependence to this city. He will remove his stock of merchandise from that place into the sto-e formerly occu pied by S. E. Young, where he will open an auction store. Petty Theft. While H. Lampman and C. W. Watts were out hunting Thursday some person, with no fear of the law, stole a gun cover, a sack of shells and several small articles from their cart. Luckily their bag of birds was not taken. Sperial C'orresi"'!'tlei)ce. 1!ai'x;;v. Sept. 2. Your corres pondent started from Canyon City about 10 o'clock A. M., and took the Canyon Creek route over the mountain to Bear Valley, which is a small valley, ar.d until recently thought only lit for summer range for stock, but we saw some line grain and vegetables growing, which would indicate that there is a chance for something more, than summer range. There is considerable fire in the mountains, and we think the mat should be looked into by the proper authorities. About three miles from Bear Valley we came to Soda, where there is a stage station and a very good mineral spring, similar to the Lower Soda on the Santiam. Here we stayed over night, and t ie next morning we passed on through SILVIES' VALLEY. Here there has been considera ble improvement made, several nice residences built and some fine grain growing.' Here we crossed the mountains into HARNEY VALLEY. Arriving about dark, we stopped with Mr. K. F. Clay poo'i, one of Harney's enterprising citzens. When we arose next morning and looked over the valley we were very agreeably surprised at the great amount of improvement made in the last four years ; for then such a thing as raising grain or vegetables in Harney Valley was hooted at as out of the ques tion entirely. Now there is fine garden, and still finer grain grow ing in all directions. The wheat crop will average forty bushels to the acre, and other grain in pro portion. We saw some wheat, the heads of which ayeraged over four inches, and the grains were as nice and plump as any we ever saw in Webfoot. BURNS, Is quite a little town, containing several stores two harness shops, two saloons, three eating houses, two livery stables, two doctors.two lawyers, two newspapers and quite a number of dwellings. There is strong talk of the U. S. land office being located here, but nothing definite is known at present, the person having to make the selec tion is now on the road from Lake view, and the question will be set tled in a short time. There will be four days racing here, commencing the 4th inst. About fifteen horses are now here, and more are looked foi . Fencing in this country is nearly all wire. THE TOWN OF HARNEY Is about 15 miles east of Burns and consists of two small villages about a quarter of a mile apart. One town is on government Jand and the other on deeded land. The government town is building up while the lower town is at a stand still. If the U. S. land office should be located here the two towns will then go together, but if it is not then there will be no more lower town, for the business men of the place say they will go where the land office is" located. The people here are looking forward to the time wnen they can hear the whistle of the locomotive on the Oregon Pacific, as it hurries through the valley, carrying their products to market, and bringing in goods at reduced prices. We predict that when the railroad comes through Harney valley that somewhere on the route will be located the metropolis of south eastern Oregon, and that in time you will see as fine orchards and ' larms here as anywhere in the state. As good school facilities are enjoyed in Burns and Harney as in Webfoot. Tendered a Reception. Rev. H. P. Webb was given a pleasant reception Thursday even ing by the members of his church and others on being returned to pastorate of the Albany M. E. church for the fourth time. About forty people assembled at the parsonage, where an ice cream lunch was served and a pleasant evening spent. Miss Hattie Bently, of Pendle ton, is visiting in this city. Time You SEPTE3 1 BET?
