Right and left of the altar I found the whitewashed walls and the two confessionals dashed and spattered a height of our or five feet from the ground with the blood of these poor selt-toi tured martyrs, crying aloud, indeed, though 'a a voice far difFerehi to that intended, to the heaven it thus seeks to propitiate. Yesteix ilfo-afternoon an old man Wa slow GSrov-to some walW, and he rested for a while in the field, near the road. He then churned the fence ' to resume his journey in the road. As he made his appearance over the fence two younc i'eiiows who were driving by m a buggy saw him for the first time. They suddenly stopped ' the horse, jumped out, climbed the feuce on the opposite side of the road and started to -in hcross the field. Th q!3 man thougi t this was y ry singu ar conduct, but after some reflection he arrived at the conclusion that it was an interposition of Provi dence in his behalf, so he got into the buggy, turned the horse around and continued on his way to San Jose. There was feed in the buggy, and, as it was getting late, he stopped after driving a few miles, unhitched the horse, fed him and camped for the night. This morning he drove into this city and dehvertd the animal and buggy to the police. A dispalch was received to-day from San Francisco stating that a horse and buggy had been stolen from a stable in that city, and it is pre sumed that this is the outfit. The young men who stole, the rig were driving to Gilroy, and when they saw the old man suddenly ap pear in front of them they undoubt edly took him for an officer. They will probably be caught. A Persistent Salvationist. Cincinnati Enquirer. The Salvation army of Nashua, N. H., Captain Maggie Cartwell com manding, was in the habit, when out parading, of stopping on thejjtreets and holding meetings in the presence of the crowds that collected and ob structed the thoroughfare?. Tie police authorities teld Captain Maggie that she must not hold , meetings in the streets. She persisted and was arrested. The judge explained the law to her, and kindly told her that it she would confine her demonstra tions on the streets to marching with flags, singingand beating tambourines, the complaint would be placed on file. She declared that she would hold the meetings as usual: wheie upon she was fined $4 and costs. She wouldn't pay the fine, and wouldn't let her friends pay it, and she langnisheB in jail, a victim of stubbornness.
