At the con ference 01 the representatives of Shei man, Alger, llanison, Biaine and Allison delegates, which took piaee to-day between 12 and 4 o'clock, M. 11. lie Young, represent ing Biaii.e s interest:,, made a state ment that if Harrison was nomi nated it would be utterly impossi ble to elect him. He could not possible curry the Taciiic coast, nor vvould ne be able to carry any o. the larger states where the labor element predominates, because he voted against tlie Chinese bill and uied in every phase of it, and Le had committed a still greater mis take in voting to naturalize the h namen, anil g ve t iein right 01 sumago, una tiici.1 Aiiisou was in exactly the same boat. The state ment, made Oy He Young created great consternation. Col. Hender son repre. eniing Allison's interests, IHougnt that He Young was mis taken aoout Aliisou's record. He Young said that he had records and could produce them at the next meeting of the conierence. The etTect of HeYoung's statement cau.-ed a re resentalive oi the New York delegation to state that he did not think his delegation would support Harrison if these facts were brought befoie them, and lie asked He Young if he would appear before tlie New York delegation to day and make that statement. The Indiana supporters of Harrison, early this moruing called on the California delegation and stated that they would n t attempt to force tiie 11 minau n of Harrison until after recess tc-day, or until this matter can be explained. Viciseilmles Which In variably Come 10 llie Man or Few Inches, Liverpool Courier. The short man has suffered much at the hands of the writers of fiction. Me is never allotted the part of the hero, though there is 110 valid reason why he should not be. Search through all the fiction you like, and look up the heroes. Thev are tall, every one of them, no niattei whether they he black, blue, gray or tawny. This is what you read: "His tail presence overshadowed and protected her as the pine of the Apennines does the strayed and bewildered lamb;" or "His form, far above the middle height appeared before her in the moonlight, and she knew that, what ever else happened she was his for ever." It is only a very realistic writer who condescends to have a hero of "average height," r.nd even he is apt to forget himself and make his hero grow, after he is lout; p-.st twenty-one, into a ' towering form " There is a special brand of humanity- kept on tap for heroes, all ci thern men who would have delighted the heart of Frederick the Great, who is tpiite welcome to them, for all wecaie. On the other hand, the writer, when he has an unsympath etic character to portray, nearly a' wa s makes him short. Look at the Vascdly attorney:" he is always ;.dc an "uui!eis:i:e.i in:;, th, mere is 110 reason why he should be. And the writer, forsooth, never makes his really respectable villain, the man who dues the bold murders, the kidnapping and the big forgeries particularly short, only those of his villains are short, who are mean con temptible curs. It is hardly necessary to add that the same writer, when he wants a butt for the exercise of his wit, or for his other character t play tricks up on, takes a short man for the purpose. It is always a short man who is fool enoutih to fall in love with the hero ine without the ghost of a chance, and who is cut out, if not kicked out, directly- the hero appears; his blasted hopes are made ' to look ridiculous, and after a humorous attempt at itiicide, he is relegated for consol ation to brandy and soda. HARD ASI SOFT W.lTEK. Journal ol Chemistry. All cooks do not understand the different effects produced by hard and soft water in cooking meat and vegetables. Peas and beans cooked in hard water, containing lime or gypsum, will not boil tender, be cause these substances harden vegetable caseine. Many vege tables, as onions, boil nearly taste less in soft water, because all the flavor is boiled out. The addition of salt often checks this, as in the case of onions, causing the vege table to retain the peculiar flavor ing principles, besides such nutritious matter as might be lost in soft water. For extracting the juice of meat to make a broth, or soup, soft water, unsalted and cold at first, is best, for it milch more readily penetrates the tissue; but ior boiling, where tiie juice should be retained, hard water or soft water salted is preferable, and the meat should be put in while the water is boiling, so as to seal up the pores at once. A Farmer' Ureal Lurk. Sulphur Swings, Tex., Letter to Dallas News. It is not often that men pick up a fortune io the road, but such was the luck of a farmer of this , county a few days since. He was passing along the road about fourteen miles northeast of this place and chanced to examine an old pot which the recent rain had washed up. and to his amazement he found it fi led with gold coins. The treasure amounted to near 18,000. Near it was an iron pin driven into a tree in such a manner as to point to the spot where the hidden treasure lay. It is supposed that the money was hidden by some Missouri guerrillas who had turned lobbeis after the war. A few days since this official, accompanied by two as sistants, went to Trieste to polish, ofl some poor wretch who was under sentence of death. While sipping beer in a ' brasserie" they were recognized, and the place was immediately turned into a battle field. They were mobbed, and narrowly escaped with their lives to the nearest police station. The proprietor of the "brasserie" then j broke the glasses out of which thev had been drinking, and after chop ping up the chairs upon which they liad been sitting, he made a bon fire of them in the street. The principal barber in Trieste was obliged to publish a card in all the local papers denying the rumor that the executioner had been shaved in Ins shop, as, in conse quence of the story getting-abroad, every one of his regular customers refused to continue their patronage.
