The short man has suffered much
at the hands of the writers of fiction.

writer who condescends to have a
hero of "average height," r.nd even
he is apt to forget himself and make
his hero grow, after he is lout; p-.st
twenty-one, into a ' towering form "
There is a special brand of humanity-
kept on tap for heroes, all ci
thern men who would have delighted
the heart of Frederick the Great,
who is tpiite welcome to them, for all
wecaie. On the other hand, the
writer, when he has an unsympath
etic character to portray, nearly a'
wa s makes him short. Look at the

All cooks do not understand the
different effects produced by hard
and soft water in cooking meat and
vegetables. Peas and beans cooked
in hard water, containing lime or
gypsum, will not boil tender, be
cause these substances harden
vegetable caseine. Many vege
tables, as onions, boil nearly taste
less in soft water, because all the
flavor is boiled out. The addition
of salt often checks this, as in the
case of onions, causing the vege
table to retain the peculiar flavor
ing principles, besides such
nutritious matter as might be lost
in soft water. For extracting the
juice of meat to make a broth, or
soup, soft water, unsalted and cold
at first, is best, for it milch more
readily penetrates the tissue; but
ior boiling, where tiie juice should
be retained, hard water or soft
water salted is preferable, and the
meat should be put in while the
water is boiling, so as to seal up
the pores at once.

It is not often that men pick up
a fortune io the road, but such was
the luck of a farmer of this , county
a few days since. He was passing
along the road about fourteen
miles northeast of this place and
chanced to examine an old pot
which the recent rain had washed
up. and to his amazement he found
it fi led with gold coins. The
treasure amounted to near 18,000.
Near it was an iron pin driven into
a tree in such a manner as to point
to the spot where the hidden
treasure lay. It is supposed that
the money was hidden by some
Missouri guerrillas who had turned
lobbeis after the war.

at Vienna is not a very desirable
position. A few days since this
official, accompanied by two as
sistants, went to Trieste to polish,
ofl some poor wretch who was
under sentence of death. While
sipping beer in a ' brasserie" they
were recognized, and the place was
immediately turned into a battle
field. They were mobbed, and
narrowly escaped with their lives
to the nearest police station. The
proprietor of the "brasserie" then
j broke the glasses out of which thev
had been drinking, and after chop
ping up the chairs upon which they
liad been sitting, he made a bon
fire of them in the street. The
principal barber in Trieste was
obliged to publish a card in all the
local papers denying the rumor
that the executioner had been
shaved in Ins shop, as, in conse
quence of the story getting-abroad,
every one of his regular customers
refused to continue their patronage.

after exchanging some very harsu
words hit him, felling him to the
ground. A few moments later a
policeman found Sullivan lyim
against a wall unconscious.and he waa
taken to the city prison, where he
djed early this morning, not having
consciousness. McNabb was placed
under arrest and is charged with
murder. Sullivan came here recent
ly from Truckee. He had beeu
drinking, but eye witnesses say that
McNabb hitting him was not suffi
ciently provoked. The attending
physician jjives the cause of death as
concussion of the brain, produced by
falling 011 the back ot his head on the
sidewalk. An inquest will be held
this evening!
