Formerly France, Germany and England like America were with out pheasants and many other kinds oi game, the so-called Eng lish phea.-ants being an importa tion. Now, however, it is quite different, for. owing to the keen appreciation of their sportsmen of cnoice varieties ol game, the spke of lield and stream, their preserve. lo' ve been richly supplied, not only with the breeds of pheasants brought to the state by myself, but the Elliot. Swinnos, Pukra and Ret )ves added. With European sportsmen neither money nor labor seem to stand in the way when a new and game variety can be pro cured, either for gun or rod. Of course the sportsmenn of the Northwest coast are not expected to' keep pace wall those of Europe in the introiluefion of game. But it is not unreasonable to expei t them to protect with every meai s at their command the natural game of the conntiy-as well as that im ported and turned adrift at the:. doors. In this connection I may men tion that pheasants are not the nr.iy donations 1 have made to the coast. While consul general I sent to Southern California trees of the lichee, a delicious st mi-tropical fruit and to Oregon the Peking pear, large persimmon and doqiiut together with the tallow tree, from I the nut of which, is collected the vegetable tallow so extensively used in China iu the manufacture of candies consumed in Bhuddist worship; al.-o the bamboo and magnolia, besides shrubs, flowers, etc., now growing in the. state. 1 also added to the different breeds of fo is in Oregon the Langshans. Marshal Peter Essier, who came in from the Warm Spring Indian reservation, reports, that on Saturday last as two young Indian women were crossing a field . on the reservation about four miles iruni the agency, they were struck instantly killed, the electric cur- (rent having entered the back of ; her neck and passed out below the shoulder, making a hole as bi around as a nickle. The other one was struck in the hip, the current passing down her leg, burning it badly and making a hole in the ground. The occurrence caused gre tt ex citement on the reservation, the Indians never having known of any one being killed by lightning, which is not strange, as this is the second occurrence of the kind which has happened in Oregon. The body was buiied as soon as possible and work was commenced digging for the supposed instru ment which had made the hole in the ground. Nearly all the In dians on the reservation were on the ground taking turns at the pick and shovel. If they succeed in finding the thunderbolt it will be the only one recovered so far as known.
