THE MOHNIXG HEftALTV FlilDAT, ,TUXE 1, 18S8. !7 i I REPUBLICAN PLATFCP- We, your committee on Platfor and Resolutions beg leave to repor as follows: The 'Republicans in the State of Oregon, in conveution assembled, re- amrmrag their allegiance to, and con ndence in, the great Republican party, of the nation, of whose grand achievements and Ions and success- ful administration of the government i great rivers should be free and open 'of the United Strtes they have so I to the sea, and i we demand of the much cause to be proud, and the i general government need of appro glory of which they are entitled to I priations therefor. At the same show, n w make and present the fol- j time ;ve recommend the next Legis lowing statement of their principles j lature to take proper and adequate and policy: I steps to insist at once in opening the First We favor honest and efii-great river to general commerce, cient administration of the depart-; Lastly A'e denounce the civil ments of government both State and j service reform professions of Presi National. j dent Cleveland as a sham and fraud, Second The right of the citizen I as promises made to secure votes be- authorized bylaw, and to have his i vote honorably tounted, ought to be respected and a !1 efforts to control c limit that right deserves the con demnation of all good citizens. Third That while disclaimin iaia right to interfere with the adm ior.' t cation of the internal affairs of ov eigh nations, we sincerely appr e the efforts of Irish and English statesmen to secure by peaceful methods the American principal of "Home Rule" for Ireland. Foutth That we are in favor of such legislation as should prohibit and punish, the manufacture of adul terated foods. Fifth That we are in favcr of the enactment of a law by Congress, whereby the homestead and pre-emption rights of settlers shall not be forfeited by cancellation of filings by the land department when settlement or filings are made in good faith. Sixth Thatwefivor the encour agement and development of our State by the construction of railroads and other systems of transportation and that we hold all corporations to be strictly responsible to their liabil-' ities under the law, ami recognize the right of the Legislature to enact all reasonable limitations on corporate power. Seventh That we regard the further immigration into the United States of Chinese laborers as directly opposed to the interests of American labor; and we therefore heartily ap prove the action of the Republican Senate in providing by proper legis ation for so amending our treaties with China as to prevent their fur-1 ther immigration here. j Eighth We recognize that- the ; nation owes a debt tn the surviving; veterans of the rebellion which can j not be adequately repaid, and hold-to j to be the duty of the general govern- j ment to provide tor the necessities of them and theirs by prompt payment of liberal pensions. !Ninh That the action of Presi dent Cleveland in ordering the return J of the rebel flags was an unwarranted j f"!,Q t- i ...... ....v;-. c vaior ne uiu nos uossess anu tne fruit; of a victory he did net help v "-?e!ltn Vhile We approve eVery ) henest effort to preserve our public lands by the punishment of willful trespasses up n them, a id are in fayor of snch measures a3 will en courage our citizens to settle upon ana inmrove them, we condemn ihe action of the present administration in its pretended efforts to protect such lamis nnnr color ot wnich, m stead of pursuing the policy of th Ss Kepnbucan administration by cans intr the arrest and punishment of those only whoss actions appeared to have been dishonest and criminal. It j has refused to cause said lands to be j surveyed, thereby discouraging their ! settlement by pepple needing and de-; siring to take them.
