The Democrat accuses the Her- : ali ot falsehood in s-tating the fact j that Judge Whitney says on the ! stump that he will bolt the pres-i i lential ticket this fall if he is not j elected county judge, and says : j "There is not a man, woman or! child in the county who cares my thing for truth, who has heard Judge Whitney, that will say that he has made any such statement." Yet everyone who heard him at Syracuse, and at several other places, heard him say so in just j about these words: "You will perhaps expect us democrats who are defeated in the June election to support President Cleveland next fall." This if it means anything means : "Perhaps wo will support Cleveland and perhaps we will bolt if we are beaten." Those whoj heard him understood it plainly enough, and Mr. Irvine m l"s;waats of ,)m patl.0,15 both ill Stv Sjld prices, speech charged him openly with , 1 " - threatening: to bolt , and Mr. Whit-' ney has since desisted from such talk. We propose to liavt The o Live DrvGoo dsHuose A.ibany, and shall 'at all times study the Mr. Irish claims that the repub lican party is responsible for the present high tariff, lie also ad mits that the tariff, as now in operation, was a war measure, : s j was the direct tax on incomes and ' :he internal revenue laws, and: recuses the republicans' of not fulfilling their promises to remove the direct tax and reduce the j tariff as soon as the war necessi-1 ties were over. Then he goes on I to sarcastically berate the republi- j cans for doing what he says they j promised to do i. e. remove direct taxation in taking off internal rev-; enue laws, and attempting to re duce the tariff, until the democratic ! It is a fact patent to all cattle raisers that the prices are slowly but surely going below the cost of raising, and that practically that branch of the husbandman's busi ness is fast becoming an unpro ductive as other branches have proven to be. The cry of over production cannot be maintained in this case. The reason will be found in the remarks of an infiii ential Eastern exchange in saying that it cannot be disputed that one of the most mischievous of exist ing monopolies is that by which the cattle markets of the country j house, for partisan purposes, are regulated and controlled. I stopped all further action in that Under the influence of this grasp-1 direction ami continue to so ob- inff and nowerml combination the ! struct and refuse r0 allow reduction !- cattle industry has been practically ! hY bringing unfair and unequal j destroyed except as it serves to bil's. This fact in the premises; enrich a tea- persons and firms at! Mr- Iri-sh ver-v discreetly neglected j the expense of both producers and to allude to, although he did claim ! consumers. The farmers who at- j that the proper way to raise rev- i tempt to raise sto-k for beef pur-j enue. was by tariff and not by f poses are compelled to abandon the undertaking because the profits which they should realize are ar bitrarily taken from them bv processes which are little short of robbery. For the past five or six .years the prices of- cattle have been steadily diminishing, in spite of the fact that the demand for beef has been constantly increasing. It is notorious that the man who ships cattle according to the quotations of a given day is almost certain to have to take less when he reaches the market. The rates do not de pend upon any fixed and honest system of commercial logic, but upon the ipse dixit of a ring of Dry Gooops &tions9 Furnishing fcroods. In a certain sen?e, these monopolists daily confiscate the property of other people: and the victims have no means of defense or redress. The estimate that the value of each steer: of three years old and upward raiset ing the past reduced at least ten dollars by this combination . is unquestionably within the truth. Generally speak ing, the prices are 50 per cent, less than they were when the cattle syndicate began its nefarious oper ations. And yet the supply of cattle is much smaller now than it was then, and the consumption of beef, is a great deal larger. The prices of beef to the consumers have gone up meanwhile, year after year, and are now higher than they have ever been before in all our history. Thus the knife oi the monopolists cuts both ways. It forces the producer to take a beggarly price for his cattle on the one hand, and on the other it forces the consumer to pay an ex orbitant price for his beef, the whole profit being pocketed by the select circle of conspirators who have the markets absolutely at their mercy. Perhaps there is no present way to break up this op nressive ring, and secure to the s ock-raisers a decent share of the v.ilue of their products; but if there is not, then some effective method of bringing about such a consummation should be invented. It is a reproach to our laws and to our boasted protection of the in terests of the , masses that such a monopoly is possible, and that the people are obliged to pay tribute t it in such a costly and helple.-sj fashion.
