ISLAMiSM Over the relative civilizing influ ence of Christianity and Moham medanism there has been consid erable discussion of late, growing out cjf Bishop Taylor's advocacy of the ; claims that the hater was' pre-eminent in certain quarters. It has already been nhown that the facts as given by the eminent divine, who seems to have became enamored oi Ma homed, were not based upon suffi cient grounds to make them en tirely reliable. Malcolm MacColl, however, goes deeper into the subject. He shows that Islam can only raise to its own level tribes lower than itself in the scale of humanity ; but this it does at the terrible cost of petrifying them at that level forever the level, that is, of the barbarous Arabs of Mahomed's day. For, except in the matter of idolatry and infanta cide, Islam, as we tind it in Mecca, its metropolis, is not in advance of the social and intellectual condition of the Arabs of that time; and tice to workingmen and the r families. The legislature of Kansas wisely abolished it by the ena rtment of a statute which makes railrotd cor porations liable for damages loj their own servants on the sair.e terms as they are liable to pasei -ger3. The Missouri Pacific claimed that this legislation was in viola tion of the fourteenth amendment to the federal constitution, for the reason that it was directed against railroad companies specially a id all employers generally. The supreme court overrules this ob jection and sustains the legislation. FACTS FOR VOTEES TO CONSIDER. t rs n 2 " (Cains 5 i - ".r. for j& FOR SORE THROAT. Albany, Mav 5, 18S8. To the Editor of thr Heralu : We are on the-eve of an impor tant election. The candidates are in the field, and they will soon be on the "stump" urging their re spective claims to your suffrages and you should know something of these would-be public servants, before the day-if election arrives. One particular disciple of economy is striving with all his powerful "demogogic eloquence" and bad grammar, and worse logic, to con vince you that no man within your knowledge can administer the c unty matters as well as himself. Let us examine the records of the county a little add ascertain if these pretensions of economy' are warranted. I don't ask you, fellow citizens, to accept unquestioned my assertions. I shall not only make assertions, but I shall furnish the proof as I proceed. In j looking over the minutes of the county court for the April term and in the transaction of county business, I find that Mr. Ad Harmon was allowed at said term for his attendance as a witness at the March term of the circuit court, as follows : Ad Harmon, 3 days attendance and 36 miles travel .". 8 9 60 A'l Harmon, 2 das attendance and 36 miles travel 7 60 An Harmon, 3 tl 0 s attendance before grand jury and 36 miles travel ? 60 Tota' 7 c0 You will observe, fellow citizens, that this was allowed for attend ance at the same term of court and the sheriff informed me said witness was served with process in the city of Albany, and that this disciple of economy guaranteed the , , . i payment of his said claim tor ins be the last declaration ot the t. , - , f ,.a i .... . f l i said attendance as a witness before D vine Will to man , it follows that , Xo t!ie ,.oimty ally progress beyond the Koran is j yQU under. not only superfluous, duc impious in addition. ;.; And the history oi Islam all over the world proves to demonstration that what was ante cedently to be expected has in fact occurred. The Musuiman world contains no longer a single iter from which radiates any intellectual light or any sign of material progress. There is not one Musuiman state in the world which wifdds independent sway v.hich, in fact, does not exist solely by the sufferance of Chris tandoii . A creeping paralysis has fastened 'upon- islam, and the hadow of the devouring eagles 'may even now be descried on its horizon, llow stands tue case oi ' ;firistianity in comparison? Its bittern man is not only to the . hristian, but to the great mass of intelligent and educated unbe lievers, the highe.-t and noblest ideal of humanity that history records or the human mind can conceive. His teaching and ex ample are the most periect exhibi tion of human virtue that the world has seen. , In view, indeed, of the relative conditions of the countries and nations that are respectively pre dominated by Christianity and Islamism,it certainly seems strange that so much prominence should have been given to the claim that the religion of the prophet con tained any real and lasting, and progressive and verifying effect in .it. The countries that still give allegiance to its tenets are the most unprogressive and effete on the globe, while on the contrary thos-e countries and nations that were illustrated by the scenes upon Calvary are the only truly pro V'cssive nations of the earth. o cc o - r1 ; - S : 2 . g o j . An action for damages may be maintained against t e con -pany for every passenger i.illod or; njured, but it is n.-t liable for tl e . death or injury oi any employe. . That is a groumik's distinction j which has been a source of iuj -j stand, fellow citizens, that the law make. no provision for the pay ment of such claims, only when the attendance has been as a witness only, and when the travel has been actual. Now, for the proof, your correspondent would refer you to the case of Crawford vs. Aoram, touna on page kk oi the second Oregon reports, where Wilson J., delivering the opinion ofthe supreme court of this Mate in ISoO, says: ''7th. In two or more cases between the san e par ti.'S, at the same term, a witness would be allowed but single mile- are attendance ; ana tne attero . j ance in each successive case would reach back only to the final disj c sition of Uk' preceding case." If such is the correct interpreta t '.in oi the law of this state, and unless this ruling of the county court has changed the rule, we presume it is the rule which our courts will follow, unless we ex cept our own court, which is a law unto itself, there has been an un warranted waste of the public money. This is such a small matter that your correspondent would not consider it worthy of his notice, but tor the high and mighty pretensions of this disciple of economy. Such are his anxieties on this subject that more than once he has rendered himself liable to the criticisms of some poor men who have served the public as supervisors, and when their ac counts weie prese-ted they were reduced from twenty-five to seventy-five per cent. Agc!n it is whispered that because riis man Harmon is the proprietor of a rum mill, and his influence may be useful to the judge in this cam paign, he has been allowed what is unlawful. Your correspondent does not make the assertion, he merely states the facts, and your readers can draw their own infer- Democrat.
