The complaint sets forth at length his contract with the Oregon Pacific company, and alleges that he had performed work to the value of $80,000, and was compelled to quit said work by the fraud and misrepresentations of defendant and violations of said contract, whereby plaintiff sus tained damages in the sura of $80,000. Mr. Hunt commenced this suit against the O. P. company in the state circuit court at Aibany some time ago, but since that time he has removed to Ohio, and now being a resident ot that state has removed the suit to the U. S. court. T1IK CALItOKMA DOOM. The Opinion of Mr. G. F. Wells on Booms and Also Clevelaad's Tariff Policy. Mr, George F. Wells an old Oregou- ian, who has spent the past winter in Alameda and is visiting other portions of California, returned to Portlaud t. few days since. In answer to an in quiry of a reporter Mr. Weils stated that the boom in Southern California was slightly on the wane. At Los Angeles, while d.eai table business and resilience proper y iu the city stii! commanded good prices and had not depreciated m value, just the op posite slate ati'airs prevailed witii regard to outside property. For miles around Los Angeles art: innumerable suburban tracts winch were sold at fabulous prices by means of brass banns and other boom schemes a tVv months ago. Lots in most of these tracts have depieciated noticeably in I value the hasten) immigrants having learned bv experience that climate and boom alone will not afford them ! a living. The large immigration to the southern portion of Cahrorma has, in a measure, decreased, ami much larger proportion of the arrivals are now going into the central and north ern portion of the state. A greai deal of inquiry is being made about Oregon and the Northwest. During the couverst.ou Mr. Wells advauceu a striking fact in couuec iton with President Cleveland's taritf policy. Mr. Wells is the owner of a large sheep ranch in Eastern Oregon, tie says in case of Cleveland's re election and the enforcement of the democratic tariff policy, he will l e forced to go out of wool raising, as it will kill the profits of the business. He will fatten 'us sheep and sell them for mutton "Tne effect of this tariff policy," Slid Mr. W ells, 'will b to raise the price of a poor man's meats. Muttui is essentially the ni.a.oftiie putr. When t me ceaststu he a pi-nth in raising wool the natural result wiii be that the indus- try wili cease, of mutton. and wita it the raisin Full of Suaa anil Stumps. In the course of an articie on river improvement, the Oregonian savs : As no work was done the upper Willamette last along i year, the channel is reported bv j pilots to be in a very bad condition ! f'-r sale navigation. Miags, stumps, in ins anu snoais are verv numer ous, and steam boatmen arc re quired to use constant precaution and vigilance to avoid serioi-s trouble. If the river and harbor bill becomes a law. and the appro priation is available, it is the pur pose of Major Jones to make a very lively campaign against these troublesome and dangerous ob structions along the upper river. For this, he will receive the devout benedictions of all the pilots and shippers." The Firemen's Tournament. The following taken from the Oregonian shows that the Portland boys do not propose letting any of the prize money or laurais leave Portland at the coming tourna ment, and if our boys expect to win any of either they had better soon begin active practice: Tues day night the team began training in earnest. When the weather permits they run races to get "wind" and "next week they will begin training with their hose cart. They are having made a practice cart which will weih about 175 pounds. The cart which they will use in the tournament is also be ing made. It will cost $175. The wheels for it have been telegraph ed for and are expected daily. In Peaceful Possession.
