Mead, president of the Arctic Ice company, have been arrested on a charge of ab ducting tHfe 17-vear old daughter of W. J. Parsons, a prominent citizen of Alleghany. The daughter. Rosa Parsons, is leading soprano of the North Avenue M. E. church choir one of the most fashionable church es here. The charge was made by Mrs. Parsons, who claims to have discovered through the aid of de tectives that her daughter was in duced to go to New York on the promise that she would be secured a position in an operatic troupe and furnished with costumes. bhe went to Trenton, N. J., stopped there several days at the Winsdor hotel under the name of Mrs. Mar shall, and was joined by Ryan and taken to New York, where she is now secreted in a flat on Broad way. The arrests have created a profound sociai sensation. The daughter has been missing ten weeks and the motner has been searching for her everywhere, and the most prominent citizens as well pastors of churches have been in terested m the hunt, lhe parties were committed for a hearing. Lieut. Eaton, who is in command here, has been notified to suspend Ryan, pending an investigation. .If the charge is sustained Lieut. Eat on says Ryan will be dismissed from the service. What was thought to be the turning point in ex-Senator Conkling's condition came this morning at 6:30 o'clock. Dr. Barker, in the form of official bulletin, announced to members of the press that ConLIing was begin ning to recover. "A marked change for the hotter," he addd, "has taken place during the night." A Fatal Dose. Portland, April 11. Mrs. Fred Catlin, of Freeport, W. T. , who came here a few days ago for med ical treatment, accidentally took an overdose of morphine this morning which resulted fatallv. She was a sister-in-law of Judge John Catlin, of this city. Aun.iListrator whh the will annexed. Portland, April 11. The 're publican state convention assem bled in the Masonic temple in thid city at 11 a. m., and was called to order by Hon. Joseph Simon, chairman of the state central com mittee. The organization was perfected' by the election of Geo. II. Wil liams, of Portland, as temporary chairman. On assuming the posi tion Mr. Williams, in his usual eloquent style, presented the posi tion of the republican party, show ing a very hopeful situation. He knew that Oregon was a republican state, and was fully persuaded that not a solitary republican could be induced to desert his post and help an administration that was eu-; dangering the best interests of the country and the principles ;that they had so faithfully battled for. While making no "objection to proper work on the temperance question, but believing in its earnest prosecution, he deprecated tne action ot tne prohibition party in their evident intention to bend every effort toward defeating the republican party. He was pleased to observe the perfect harmonv that prevailed, and the evident in tention of every republican of stick ing by and working for the nom inees ol the convention. On motion John H. Shupe, of Douglas county, was elected tempcriry secretary and O. P. Miller, of Clackamas county, .as sistant secretary. On motion C. E. Moore, of Benton; Geo. H. Burnet.of Marion, S. W. Lord, 164; Web ster, 15; Whalley, 23; Lord being declared the nominee. : C. W. Fulton, of Astoria, was nominated as presidential elector on the first ballot. The committee on platform are still at work on that document. The district nominees were chosen by the sevenl districts w-hich will be ratified by the con vention to-morrow.
