The amount of the actual surplus in the treasury is one of these facts, and Reagan's amendment, when it is leached, which calls for the $100,000,000 of gold coin kept in the treasury a3 a special reserve fund to be used in purchasing bnds, will call attention to the various funds lying idle there. Very few have an adequate idea of what is actually there. On the 1st of March the monthly state ment showed that there was an aggregate of $465,4561445 of gold and silver on hand. Of this vast amount the treasury oilieials t on sider only $9o,00;,0)0 as surplus. The remainder, tin y reason, must lie idly iu the vaults to inspire confidence. Thus there is one sack containing $10 ',000,000 gold to brace up the legal tenders ; an other contains $96,697,913 to keep the stiffening in the gold certificates which, by the way, are rarely or never presented for redemption, being used in the payment oi customs duties and circulating gen. erally ; there is a sack which iiohis 134,452,659 silver dollars to re deem silver certificates, which the people never present for redemp tion ;, then there is a little pocket with about $13,000,000 ready to aueei matured debt and unpaid in terest, anl a bulky iel.ow with 443,833,221 iu it for post office and 'disbursing accouiitrf, and last, hn, by no means the smallest, is the sack containing $23,335,4:'l worth -oi subsidiary silver, which no one seems to want, as it roimins in the treasury year after year with out beinx called for. I'erbaj s i when senators begin to ak the question why this enormous amount of money is piled up in vaults, doing nothing, while we 'have a bonded indebtedness of over a billion dollars on which "wo are p ivhig interest, some one with sens may arise and point out that it is because we have allowed Wall street to attend to the business of running the treasury, and the 'money men of the country to m mipiilate the purse strings of the government for the purpose of 8 f iling their already plethoric pockets. In referuig to Alaskan affairs the West Shore cailsi attention to the fact that Governor Sw ineiord, of Alaska, has made a reoort showing the Alaska Fur eal Company in aa unenviable light. He says it is -a concern that has grown en or - ' . 1 :..u r .1.. 111 msiy ricii liuiu il? aaimjiuii , and has g'own arrogant and tyran ica?. At the time the contract w as awarded, the ;overnment iu not comprehend the magnitude of the! fur seal business, nor did the people have any idea of the im portance and value of this trailic. The contract will soon expire. It 5s recommended that even at this Ire day, some steps be taken to remedy the abuses which are nrantii-pil under the contract. ! , , . . . . , ! All that is required is settlement, up on which new discoveries will fol low. 'S dying at his home in. New York, 1 1 Tue s ssionof congress is diaw-j in tu a close, and the democrats ; have done nothing to avert the dire j disaster predicted by Cleveland in December "last. The passage of J the bond purchase act is simply a ; work oi supererogation. Had the administration been desirous of relieving the surplus by paying off t .e national debt, it could have d me so without farther authority. The act in its present shape is inere'y a di claration that there is a law in force, and amounts vir- jtnVlv to a rebuke to Cleveland's 1 treasurer, who his refused to avail h rnse f of the undoubted author ity conferred upn him to buy bonds whenever there is a surplus in the treasury. If there fails to be a smash in the not very remote future it will not be dues to the fact that kings, princelings-, etc., of the old wdrlrt are not doing alt in their power to bring about such a calamity, and all under a neautiful free trade reign, too ! S r. Joirx, who is haranguing his third party brethren on his old hobby of four years ago, will be here to-morrow.
