THE REPUBLICAN NOMINEES The republican party of Linn county are to be congratulated on the nominations made yesterday. They are from first to lust as iood a set of men as has ever been placed before the voters of this, county, and the particular qualifi cations of several at least of the candidates for the oilices for which Vhey were nominated, cannot bur appeal to voters generally at the polls next June.' In the election of representatives this year tnere will be more than usual interest. In view of the fact that the next legislature will elect a United States senator, it is es sential that men of no uncertain or wavering principles be elected, and the wisdom of the convention yesterday was sharply manifest d in putting forward good, sober men who will make a strong race. Of the ecu sty noinii ations the IIeralj) will have more to .ay hereafter something that will i o doubt in several re; icts be I in terest to the voters of Linn connt . It is sutlicient now to say that the county iffords no better men than those put forward by the repub licans. THE GER MA N SI T UA TION. The attention of the civilized world is directed at present to i lie condition of affairs in the German capital, wherj so lately the ;e vered emporer dropped the mantle of eaitldy duty and passed from sight forever ; and where, at pres ent, the new emperor, wliose physical strength is said to be not adequate to the work his strong wilt is taking hold of, stands forth $he most prominent object. But t sis aim, tne noblest set bv any ruler since the good emperors irave the Roman world a century of peace, is per sonal. The old machine of pe: soual power is left unchanged, ready to be seized on the emperor's death by a young man who believes l.i war as the one fit trade of men who rule. We have, therefore, if Frederick dies, a change in this policy certain, and if he lives a chance that a weak rule will tempt Russia to war. lu neither case does spring open in hope for Europe. The observations of the press are undoubtedly the conclusion ol every intelligent observer,' but Frederick III is developing a power both physical and mental, and a controlling influence that materi ally changes the aspect of attain as far as he is concerned. He gives promise of not only reversing the 'judgment that pronounces his administration weak, but may also aatiier the leading strings from the i hands of Bismarck who appar ently 1ms an inclination in the warlike direction and by hi oaciiic control give (.icrniaisy and Europe a lasting peace.
