weeks in California with no other
purpose than that of studying the
means employed by the people of
California to advertise their state

became familiar, and, . therefore,
his opinions iu this matter are
considered worthy of a hearing.
"The newspapers of the large

moans of advertising Oregon and
Portland," said Mr. Flynn ; "in
fact there is no other means worthy
of consideration in comparison

west, a thrifty, intelligent people,

gnawing matches. Three large
rats Were placed iu a wire cage
containing a bunch of matches.
The first night four fiivs were set
by the rats.- and others were
c'i'ised during following days.
Examination of the matches show
ed that onlv the phosphorous ends
were gnawed, aud that some of
them were carried some distance
from the original bum-h. The rats

Cinci.xnati, (.Ohio), April 4. -A
special from the City of Mexico
says that ail vices from Celaya,
Sunday afternoon, statu that about
forty-live minutes past four o'clock
when tlie bull ring of Celaya was
crowded with. spectators ol tlie gen-
eral national sport, and while the
company bu!l fighters were still
playing with the first bull, fire sud
denly Dioke out on the sunny side
of the plaza. Panic seized upon the
vast assemblage and a. frightful
catastrophe was the result. The
plaza was constructed of wooden
u a'erials, etc., and it was due to
this fact that the majority escaped
without irjury, being able to force
an opening to ermit an exit at
different points, but many woman
and children jumped from the top
and over two hundred arsons were
seriously wounded and eighteen
lives were lost. The sides of the
plaza being lined with matting
were as dry as tinder, and there
being a slight wind blowing the
ampitheatre was ablaze in a few
seconds. Nine dead bodies, in
some cases, were so eharred as to
0e unrecognizable were taken from
the ruins. Nineteen persons were
badly burned, and at least ten of
them will die. Fifty persons in es
caping were knocked down and
trampled upon by the panic strick
en throng and are very seriously
but not fatally injured. The bulls
maddened by the roaring of the
ri.nnes broke loose from their stalls
and" rutiCil wildly through the
surging mass of humanity, tossing,
abdt and knocking over all who
