What goes to make up the lead ing productions of a country, in providing for the wants and neces sities of the human family, can safely be enumerated as being the natural wealth of the country. One of the original sources of wealth was the possession of do mestic animals, and in the old patriarchal days a man's conse quence was gauged by the number of animals he pos&jssed. Thus the bible, describing one of the great men of Judea, says that he was a jich man and a man of note among his people, posse-sing great herd?, of cattle and large numbers of beasts ot burden. Although modern usage now gauges individual wealth not in kind, but. its repre sentative, money, nevertheless the number and value of the domestic animals a nation possesses is a prime source of wealth and inde pendence. From this source must be derived a people's principal food supply, as well as most essen tial aids to trade and transporta tion. In this respect this great country, so singularly favored in all matters, is most particularly blessed. The knowledge and aj preciation of this natural source o wealth is therefore highly essen tial. The last report of the national agricultural bureau, just published, gives interesting and exhaustive details concerning the number of our domestic and farm animals. Of horses the bureau reports a larger increase, during the past year than in any other class of animals, due to greater interest shown all over the countrv in horse breeding. Great improve ments have also been made in the different breeds, the tendency being toward larger and heayier horses for draft purposes to meet the needs of our ever growing commerce. The commissioner says that horse3 are found to be hardier than any other class of ai -imals, their great intelligence guarding them against many of the clangers and diseases that the others are subject to. This increase in horses, estimated to be as much as 5 per cent., is most important, they being the most useful servants of man, able assistants in com merce, as well as a source of strength in war. The extension of cattle-growing has been normal and has feept pace with the growth of population. Our supply of swine has varied but little, while that of sheep has declined in obe dience to that well-known economic aw which forbids production in excess of needs. This mainte nance unimpaired of our animal food supply is of vital importance, as, together with the abundance of cereals we command, assures us a plethora of bread and meat at home and makes as about the onlv one of the great nations entirely independent in this respect. The constant improvement and profitable increase of domestic animals should be made the care ful study of our husbandmen. Too much care cannot be devoted to that subject. The IJibsian government las pronibired the circulation of Amer ican bibles h; the Bailie provinces From the dominion Iiousp' of commons corned tie report that the governments of Great Britain and the United States are carrying on a diplomatic correspondence relative to the definite establish ment of the boundary between B itish America and Alaska. The real estate boom seems to be fast spreading over Oregon. We are informed that land in the vicinity of Roseburg has doubled in value during the last six weeks. TEMPER SNCE NOTES. Contributed by the Vv . O. T. C There are 1051 unions in the state of Pennsylvania, whose membership numbers 21,000. Since the closing of the whole sale liquor houses in Sioux City, Iowa, the criminal dockets have been utterly devoid of interest, the number of arrests having fallen off one hundred and thirteen in one month, and the "revenues" to magistrates and court officials de creased over one-half in thirty davs. Prof. Winship, of the New Eng land Journal, says of the Blair "ducatiortfll bill now before con gress: "The sentiments of the superintendents of schools wa almost solidly in its favor; the opinion of the educators of the country is almost a unit in its favor." We are glad to note Ore gon's representative is in the fore in this important matter. The speech ui Waller T. Mills, the Phil Sheridan of the prohibi tion army, on last Tuesday was a masterpiece, full of loiric, comnion- ee, and sparkling with rare wit. A3 a platform speaker, Mr. Mills has few equals, and as a political thinker and reasoner. he has both breadth and depth. lie presented the claims of the prohibition party in such a masterly, honest and forcible way as to gain the admira tion of even those who are opposed to the movement. He seems to have made a thorough study of the science of politics, and as all in telligent men and women like t hoar a fair and honest, presentatior of any great issue, his large audi ence was highly entertained aw: wry appreciative, and wul.; gladly welcome him again to our city. On last Monday evening a few of our citizens were highly enter tained at the W. C. T. U. hall b Dr. A. J. JudkU'S, corresponds g secretary of the national prohibi tion, committee of Chicago. The Dr. is an eminent divine and a most entertaining platform speak r. He gave some interesting facts concerning the organization of the prohibition paify, ami presented this movement in a new light to some of his hearers. It is to be regretted that our people did not understand the mental caliber or high standing of this scholarly mai, for had they known, his audience would have been larger. And just here permit and an humble observer to say, that citi izens of as prosperous and intel lectual a town as Albany aspires to be, can scarcely afford to ignore such men as Dr. Judkins, although he does not argue from a third party standpoint.
