J.LIVIC yet room for a number of fami lies to settle upon government land. A still larger area of grazing lands remains unused, the hills and mruntains which surround it containing very good range for abundant stock throughout a large part of the year. This stream affords, as do all the torrents which flow from the higher Cascades, abundance of water power for the various uses of the sawmill, gristmill and general manufacturing, and never fails to send down a good body of water, even in the dryest season The di viding range between it and the North Santiam is about 1500 feet high at its lowest point, and is heavily wooded in most parts, but contains much good pasturage which as yet is unutilized. This remark is true of all the valleys and hill ranges throughout the re gion, the grazing capacities not be ing fully taxed in any case. The so called Quar'zville turn pike lends from the North Santiam nenr 1),n Smith's to QuartzviHe, miles farther on, and upon a gulch which i nns into Canal Fork canyon.
