It is doubt ful if the best informed republican in Washington would attempt to say who the candidate will be. He may be any one of the dozen gen tlemen mentioned or he may be as yet unamed. Let us consider how the chances sttnd at present. Senator SuerraaD, is developing 00 isiderable strength in the South, out unless he tan make some friends in other states his nomin ation is extremely doubtful. Sen ator Harrison and Jude Gresham havo both shown themselves to possess much strength in the Northwest, but the :ll feeling that hs already cropped out between their followers disposes of the chances of both of them. Mr. (Jhauncey Depew has a consider able following in tha Eastern states and just n-w he is credited with having area! boom in Pennsyl vania. So far no one of the other candidates appears to be attempt i'lg to antagonise Mr. D-pcw, but then his fallowing is perhaps too small as yet to make that necess ary. Senat r Plumb had read a let'er received by an ex" sol dier in Kansas and written by a Washington pension agent, which intimated tha the writer had special facilities for pushing pri vate pension cairns through Con gress. The letter asked for a fee of $25, $10 in advance and balance upon passage of lil!. Mr. Plumb said he beleived "fiat large sums of money were being obtained from ex-soldiers by men who lou der i hem no strvice whatever." Senator Hale wanted to know tte name of the firm who sent the letter; in view ot the lact the rules of the pension committee piohib ited all attorneys or claim agents making auy arguments before the committee, it was plain that they could render no service to the ex srldier. therefore the letter was clearly intended to deceive aud de fraud the man to whom it was written. Mr. Plumb preferred not to name the b'rui until the whole matter had been thoroughly investigated by the pension com mittee. Senators Davis, Cockrell. Plumb, aud Hale each took this occasion to denounce the Washing ton oiaim agents a "sharks.'' The dependent pensiou bill has been under consideration by the House committee on pension, but a; yet no action has been taken on n. I etitions have been been pre sented in thr House from Pennsyl vania and Ohio, asking for the pas sage of a service pension bill and the per diem pension bill. From the Raleigh News. In a private letter to a gentle man in this city from Colonel John B. Whitford there is an accouut of some forest giants lately measured in Green aud Wilson counties, on Cohteutnea Creek. One pine tree measured twenfy two feet in cir cumference and would make astick or timber, solid heart, six feet square and thirty five feet long, or straight-edge plank six feet-wide and thirty-rive feet long. Another pine measured eighteen feet m circumference and 100 feet to the first branch. Some white oaks measured and would make planks two feet wide and sixty feet long. A pine which was felled for mak ing shingles measured four and one-balf feet in diameter, and 142 feet in length. These immense trees are found abundantly in that section and will some day cem- maud a good price. fMy Promotion. Dispatches from the Northwest continue to report severe storms of sleet and snow. " In northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Dakota over a foot and a half of snow has fallen, blockading the railroads badly. The little town of lievillo, Dakota, is completely blockaded in, and is without fuel, the people beingcom pell'id to break up furniture for fires. In Iowa a sleet storm has prevailed for two days and the weather is very cold. It is feared that the wheat is seriously dam aged. The floods in the Missouri val ley grow more threatening from day to day, as the gorges are be coininj? stronger with the cold weather. At Jackson, Neb., the peopje have abandoned their farms on the low lands and are seeking shelter on the hills. Dr. .UcUlynn Ke-F.leclcd. Nkw York, March 27. At a meeting of the anti-poverty society last night Dr. McGlynn was re-elected president for the ensuing year. The society endorsed the cali for a national convention of the united labor party to be held at Cincinnati May 15. S. government. Drowned in Wah Bailer. Cinco (Cal.j, March 27. A 2-veai'-uld child of Win. Mare was drowned in a wash boiler contain ing three inches of water this morning. The mother left the child for a few moments and placed her near the boiler, and when she returned she found her dead. Miss Lelia Robison, the woman lawyer, was some time ago the assistant counsel in a case in which an important witness was a mau who is in the Massachusetts State Prison on a life sentence. The un happy wretch had not been out cf durance for seventeen years, and a sight of a bit of the world, even though that bit was no more cheer ful or attractive than the court room, filled his whole soul witn a wiid joy. He was so thoroughly deliguted that in a moment of" rapture he threw his arms about Miss Robison and kissed her fervently as a means of expressing his appreciation of the distant glimpse of liberty he had, though niesns of the summonds to the wit ness Dox, enjoyed.
