court Monday morning, suffering
from malaria and a vague, indis
position. He did not read the
opinion in the telephone case, but
sat through its reading and then re
turned to his home. II was
wakeful Monday night, and on
Tuesday morning symptoms of

panied by insomnia and great rest

A cold rain has materially reduced
the rush of water to the Mohawk
river and may prevent any more
immediate danger. Trains are
running very h regularly on the
Central road west. The short
bridge over Schoharie creek will
not be fully repaired for several
weeks, and only one train on this
division is running. The wooden
arches of the immense aqueduct
erie canal at Fort Hunter have
been carried away.

Springs. Sweetwater county, the

the Mongolian quarters. His
throat was cut from ear to ear, and
was literally beaten to a jelly. A

Chinaman lived alone, and was
known to have about $600, and

Pacific ('oast members of Congress
today received the following dis
watch from San Francisco signed
by a number cf prominent citizens
of that city.- "VVe are interested
in the matter of the proposed for
feiture of the Oregon, wagon road
grants. The report of the inves
tigating commissioners sent by
Sparks to Oregon, and which has
been sent to Congress, is grossly
false and unjust. We have vested
rights to the amount of $2,000,000
in these grants. We beg that you
will have the subject matter refer
red to the Judiciary Committea
of both Houses and give us ample
opportunity of being beaid."

seaward began Friday. Six barges
are now used in hauling rock from
the quarry near Vancouver the
four government barges and two
of the O. 11. & N. company's
barges. The government barges
hold 22 tons each ; the O. K. & X.
barges G00 tons each. If rock is
going to be brought so far, eight
barges are need to properly expe
dite the work. A railroad is what
is really neetlcd, and the saving of
hauling charges would pay for the
railroid before the work is com
