An Auspicious Opeoicg at the Opera House
Last Evening To-Day's Programme.
The regular teachers' institute
for Linn county convened at the
opera house in this city last even
ing. A large attendance was
present, and the institute was
opened with every indication of a
successful and profitable session.
The address of welcome was de
livered by Miss Ollie Kirkpatrick.,
of the Albany public schools, in
well chosen words, which was re
sponded to by Prof. J. M. Williams,
principal of the Halsey public
school. Hon. E. B. McElroy,
superintendent of public instruc
tion, then delivered an able
address, which was followed by an
instructive lecture by Prof. B. L.
Arnold, of the state agricultural
college at Corvallis.
A pleasing solo was sung by Mr.
Adair accompanied by Prof. Lee on
the piano.

Pursuant to a previous notice,
the prohibitionists of Scio precinct
met at the city hall. The house
was called to order by Mr. T. P.
Goodman, and on motion Mr. J.
L. Miller was elected chairman of
the meeting and Mr. T. W. Bry
ant, secretary. The meeting then
proceeded to the election of Ave
delegates to attend the county con
vention of Linn countv. Messrs.
T. P. Goodman, T. W. Brvant, T.
J. Denney, M. C. Gill and S. I.
Shore placed in nomination. On
The prohibitionists held their
countv convention in this city yes
terday, sixteen delegates being
present.
The meeting was very slimly at
tended. It was called to order by
T. P. Goodman and was opened
with prayer by Rev. H. P. AVebb.
T. J . Denny was elected chairman
and A. Y. Smith secretary.
The following were elected dele

The meeting was a very informal
one, and a number of spectators
dropped in to see what was going
on. There was hardly enough
men to till the offices, and Hon. R.
A. Irvine, a stanch democrat, nar
rowly escaped being nominated for
a county office. His name was
proposed and he seconded tlie
nomination, but the chairman
fearing probably that some scheme
was on foot, declared it out of or
der. Dr. G. W. Gray was nominated
for representative, but his name
was dropped when it was learned
that he is not a third party man.

democratic ticket straight, but that

citizens of Albaoy and Lebanon tor
a direct mail service. Representa
tive Hermann called upon the post
master general to request that ter
minal service at Lebanon aod
Albany, Oregon, be put on. He
stated that the O. & C. railroad
had given notice that it would
carry mail between these points
but would not (supply postofnees
from the depot. Postmaster Gen
eral Dickinson stated that there
was but one place in the country
where terminal facilities were af
forded in a place of that character,
but be would take the request into
consideration.
The postoffice at Little Elk,
Benton county, Oregon, will be
known hereafter as Eddyville, the
name having been changed. Israel
Eddy is postmaster at that office.
Patents were granted to Frank

was tried and convicted in the
circuit ccurtof Multnomah county
for forgery on two indictments and
was sentenced to the penitentiary
for five years on one and seven on
the second. Several months after

his case having been appealed to
thejsupreme court was reversed,
so far as his seven year sentence
wa9 concerned, and Monday this
charge against him was dismissed
