The subject of divorce is one th;it attracts a great deal of discus sion, nearly always tinged with a vein of sarcasm though it is too sdriou3 a matter, it would be treated with levity. Perhaps no other subject pos sesses the absolute necessity ot national uniformity of law as does this, and still there is more diver gence and difference upon this sub ject than upon any ether in the laws of our country. No one can " htflp being cognizant of the fact of the necessity of uniformity. The Chronicle mentions a case j illustrating this point in a case I which recently happened in New York which goes far to re-enforce j the arguments of those who be-: lieve in the necessity for national idws on the subjects of marriage aVid divorce. A man came to Cal ifornia from New York, and while had left in that state, to join him j there. She refused to do so and he brought an action for divorce in a California court and obtained a decree. Af ier the granting of the decree he married a California lady. The newly-wedded couple j went to New York city on a wed- j dilng trip, and while there hi3 first j wife brought suit against him for i an aosoiuie divorce on tne grounu i of adultery with his second wife. ! Tlh iud"e before whom the suit j.u.1 . juue uciore u..i.i me siui Ayas brought granted the decree, holding that the California court l,,l :: , ; , . had no junsuiction over the first wife, and that her rights were not , . aiiected m any Way by the Cali- fnrnio 1V1 fi.,.u " lorili.l Uivorte. It says: "The report of the dangerous conditic n of Tillamook light house at the .mouth of the Columbia should be promptly investigated. If the rock is liable to give way under 'the shock of the huge waves that beat against it, some other locality should be selected at once. It is unjust to condemn the light-keepers to the danger of the awful death that would be their fate in case the station succumbed to the sea." President Seelye, of Amherst college, has made a study of our "Political Prospects' to determine j what large moral principles the J political party that hopes for per- j manent success must now build j itself on. This essay will appear j in the Forum for March. In the i same number Representative Wm. M. Springer, explains the "Hin- j c, .7,, Po1npb'on " arauces i uu.Fx end TVtr Wm. R. Morrison points out from a revenue reform point of view, "Who is Benefitted by Pro tection." The latest story on the Mun chausen order is that a farmer in Illinois has commenced the use of ear trumpets fur his oxen which had become deaf. It is further stated that the oxen regained lost appetite and exhibited gratitude. Next. ABOUT STRIKES. The following from the Alta is of ! course an extreme view upon the j striking question, iieverthele?s it strike has been figured up with ap- proximate accuracy. It has en tailed a loss of $4,000,000, distri buted as follows : $2,000,000 wages, which the miners and other em ployees lost by being off on a strike instead of at work; $1,000,000 lost by the Reading company, ,and $900,000 which the 'consumers of coal from the Reading company's mines had to pay in increased cost on Recount of the strike. Now -1 who has been the gainer by this ? i Of course the $2,000,000 worth of ; nfG3ra force spent in idleness can never be recovered, because it j has passed as complete ly into the i realm of nothingness as if that : much property bnilt by hands had i been destroyed bv fire. Bat the oy j loss has fallen upon those who are I the least able to bear it. The cause of labor will have made a great i stride forward when some other j method than the cruel and abor- tive strike shall be agreed upon ! for adjusting differences between emplovers ana employees, it is a i matter for congratulation that rail road management in this state has been so prudently and equitably directed that no such disastrous ! strikes as have prevailed in the East have ever disturbed the in dustrial svstem here."
