attendance of delegates, the only
vacancy being iu- the membership

After a brief discussion William
Steinway was elected to lill the
vacancy. The committee deter
mined upon Jul v 3rd as the date
of holding the national convention
bv a vote of 28 to 20. The San
Francisco men were jubilant, and
declared tnat the deciMon was fa
vorable to the selection of their
city as the place of holding the
convention.

Chicago, Feb. 22. The Daily
News Washington special says
that the convention tight is prac

Several committeemen arrived this
morning who had been counted for

out in favor of Chicago. Wyoming,

have changed from San Francisco

arrestei by Detective Colley.on a
warrant issued at the instance of G.
H. Forrest, for grand larceny. The
complainant charges that, while in
company with Ryan at Saturday
nights' masquerade, the iatter stole
?H0 from him. As both men were
drunk at the time, Forrest will ex
perience some difficulty in proving
his charge.

Cavern.

A few days ago while taking a trip
throughout the counrry I visited a
couple of ancient caves at Osa A-a-mura,
Tamagori, Musashi province.
These caves were first discovered by
a resident of that village named Min
ewa Yasutaro, a few years ago while
he was hunting foxes. Both eaves
face the southeast. One is about
twelve feet square and about nine
feet in height, and the other consists
of two rooms about equal iu size.
The entrance to them was so low
I could scarcely get inside. When
he first examined them, Mr. Minewa
rold nie, he found two skeletons in
one and six in the other, one also
containing a sword. These he buried
in this vicinity, he and his neighbor
constructing a tomb with stones
taken from "the cave. Mr. Minewa
has in his possession a tooth taken
from one of the skeletons; it is a
little larger than the ordinary teeth
of human beings.

sational suit has been filed here as
a sequel to a acundal in Kansas
City three years ago. At that time
Mis? Francis Djke, a young wo
man well known in upper social
circles, instituted suit against
George Is. v an Every, a prominent
middle-aged business man, for
seduction under a promise of m;;r-
i jiage, and to compel hi in to maiu-
tain her child, a result of their j
relations.
While the case was pending iu
court the defendant suddenly dis
appeared aud came out to this coast,
followed soon by his brothers, who
are weil known real estate men.
Miss Dyke determined to follow
Van Every and located him at
inanta -Monica, living in style. .The
result was a renewal of legal pro
ceedings here takinsr shape in a
suit tW $20,000 for a breach of

the Berlin Echo,' there are several
parishes in which the public cele
bration of marriage is still accom
panied with some remarkable ac
cessories. In the parish of Merk
witz near Oschatz, a printed ''Lok
alstatut" is presented to the intend
ing bride and bridegroom when
they ask for the publication of their
bans. The "statute" regulates the
examination of the espoused pair
by the Pfarrer. The candidates
for holy matrimony are solemnly
asked by the pastor "whether they
can, in pure conscience, claim for
themselves the honorable predi
cates of maiden and bachelor."

are prohibited from wearing the
myrtle crown or carrying myrtle

out this delicate obligation with
success. If any married couple
has been discovered to have "un-

it is a great thing for anybody to

In fact, his autograph hath no wing
at all, but, to quote from the poet,
it gets there just the same on a
bank check, Colonel Gould is all
right fiuaocially. Then there's
John L. Sullivan. When he puts
on a four-ounce glove and places
his signature iu an autograph
&lbum, there is nothing pretty
aooutit, but, no,withstanding, he
has made remarkable progress in
his chosen field of 6tudy. Dr. Su.1

It wouldn't be very hard to name
three or four thousand others who
have succeeded without being able
to make a pen act as if it had a
hard attack of insanity. In fact
no man, unless he was running a

ing an explosion occurred in the
the rock cut on Fourth street.
Eighteen men were injured, eight
are now in the hospital, one died
oh reaching the hospital, and
another can not live through the
day. The men and rocks were
hurled many feet by the shock of
the explosion which was caused by
some cartridges, fired last Satur
day, but which did not explode
until the men resumed work
about them, when a few taps of
the drill set off' the unexploded
dynamite.

Chicago, Feb. 22. Charles IIol
ton, son of C. C. Holton, a .promi
nent and wealthy furniture deaJex, -was
fatally wounded this ;iiorning
by his youaer brother, Ethan Al
len Holten. The fear of burglars
induced Charles to purchase a re
volver, which he kept under his
pillow. Yv'hen the boys were
dressing this morning, Ethan tooc
the weapon and playfully pointed
it at his brother, when it was ac-
cidently discharged, the bullet
entering the brea-t of Charles. The
physicians say he cannot live.
The President's Southern lonr.
Savannah, Feb. 22. The presi
dential party arrived here this
morning and left for Jacksonville
after an hour's drive through the
city. The president rode in an
open carriage, and was greeted
with cheers wherever he appear
ed. He was met at the depot by
the maj or and a reception commit
tee of citizens who extended to
him the hospitality of . the city.
The reception was wholly informal
and there was no sjeei hmaking or
handshaking during the entire vis
it. Presidential Appointment..
Washington," Feb. 21. The
Rev. J.J2. Price, colored president
of the Livingston college, at Salis
bury, N. C. has received a letter
informing him that the president
has appointed him minister resi
dent and consul general of the
United Satates in Siberia. Mr.
I'rice has not decided whether he
will accept the office or not.

Wingard and Annie Fox, Uncle
and niece, in jail here for eloping

tionists of Marion and Folk coun
ties held a banquet in Salem to
day, and the county central com
mittee had a session, at which it
was decided to hold the primaries
