ALBiXV A THE KtOJ PAl IF1 Albany's Prospects -This Season's Rail road Work The Kelson Bennett Snit. The Evening Bulletin, of San Francisco, in an article in which the writer seems to know what he is talking about says : The Oregon Pacific directors have lately sent out instructions to their managers here to make every prep aration for vigorous woik "in the spring. Beginning in April, it is hoped during the months that fol low to push the line far into East ern Oregon for 250 or 300 miles, and by the summer of ISS'J, it all goes well, it is hoped to see the line through to Boise City. Before reaching that point there will be connection with the short line of I the Lnion Pacific, that now runs from Umatilla to Granger, on the main line. Last winter work was carried on all the time, but this year the weather has been more severe, and beside there has bef-n much, trou ble with contractors. Cress-suits for large amounts are now pend ing between the company and contractors G. YV. Hunt and Nel son Bennett. One suit against Bennett is for $700,000 for failure to complete a contract within a j specified time. The con.ractors j urge that the engineers' estimates; are at fault. The immigration to interior Oregon is increasing rapid ly. Government land is fast be ing taken up. Many new settlers are going and many more are known to be coming. A great im migration this spring is predicted. Real estate values have increased at Albany, Corvallis and other points over 200 per cent, during the past year, according' to state ments of a gentleman who knows alt about matters there. One man bought seventeen acres at $170 per i aore, near Albanv last summer. and six months after he sold his purchase for $300. Many specu lators are there from abroad. By April 1 it is exnected to re- i sume active construction work. Of the aOO miles of the route from Ya quina Bay across the fertile inter ior of Oregon to Boise City, about 108 miles are to be built. "The sur vey has been completed the entire distance, and grading has been done amounting to ail about 3U0 miles. The end of the completed road is at a point near Thomas creek, about twelve miles beyond the Santiam river and twenty miles east of Albany on the Wil lamette. Substantial bridges had to be built over the Santiam and Thomas creek. The road bevond this point runs generally easterly, and in the next fifty miles ascends the spurs of the Cascade range. Here is the most diliicult work' oi j the route, but much of the prelim i inary labor has already been done. I The heaviest grade here will not be j over lUti feet to the mile. The (greatest altitude reached by the projected route is about 4700 feet. xne mountains m tins section of the country form the western boundary of a great inland plateau. The road does not again descend at any point to its previous level in the Willamette Valley i the way to Boise City the route i will range in altitude between 3000 and 4000 feet. On this great tal .le j land the work is easy. The route j passes through many fertile vallevs ! and a great, grazing country. The crossings at the Deschutz an Mal heur rhers in Eastern Oregon have already been secured. The Ore gon Short Line made several sur- j veys in the Malheur Valley, but j since then its route has been" aban i doned. j To Hit 4 :1. ens ul AUiaii.y. j As the seventh annual eneamp- ment of the department of the Or- egon G. A. ll. and V. R. C. will i convene in our citv February '22, "Washington's Birthday," and as I representatives from ail parts of j the state, to the number of two I hundred or more, will be piesent. we would respectfully ask all citi zens, and especially the business men, to decorate their dwellings anil places of business in some suitable manner befitting the occa sion by a display of bunting or flags as they think best, and to assist us in welcoming our guests so that the good name our city has sustained in the past for hospitality may be maintained. By order of the committee. ".Memoirs" of the Late lr. .ary. We have received from Mr. S. B. Eakin, of Eugene City, a copy of the "Memorial of the Life and services of Dr. E . K . Geary. ' ' The "Memoirs," which are "a fitting tribute to the life of one of Ore gon's best men, are now published and in the hands of Mr. Eakin, of that place, for distribution. lie has a few left after delivering or dered copies, and any one wishing a copy can procure it from him. The late Dr. Geary resided for many years in Albany, where he had many friends who will no doubt be glad to secure a copv of the "Memoirs." 4. 1 veil Three taj s in Jail. John McClane and Martin Dempsey were arraigned in Re corder Henton's court on a charge of drunk and disorderly. They were found guilty and in default of the coin to pay their fine were given three days each at work on the streets. It is not known whether the latter is a relative of slugger Jack Dempsy or not. Ciermun Ball. A German hall will lie given at the opera house by the German citizens of Albany and vicinity on Friday evening, March 0. A fine supper is to be served at the,. City Restaurant, and an enjoyable time is promised. An adv. containing names of committees, etc. appears elsewhere in tiiese columns. Reduction of Fares. The Oregonian says that the Pullman Palace car fares between St Paul and Port.and or Tacoma, will be reduced from ijd-3 to $13.50. THE MORNING l AYt FOUftSVILLE XOI ES. Cbawfokdsville, Feb 13. Work on the new saw-mill is progressing. The proprietors ex - pect to have the mill running this summer. Mr. Evans, a gentleman work ing in the logging camp on the Calapooia, fell a few days ago, and seriously injured himself. Last Thursday W. B. Glass, of the firm of Glass Bros., met with quite an accident. He was stand ing near one of the machines, when a belt broke, hitting him a severe blow in the side. Four gentlemen from Michigan have been in this neighborhood during the last week, looking for cheap land in which to invest. If these gentlemen are pleased with the country inoie are expected to follow. Everything is quiet here jus now, owing to the fact that the farmers are engaged in their spring work, and it is rather hard to find anything of interest to write from this place. Miss !" :iie Derrick, started last Monday fur the home of her uncle in Eastern Oregon. Her health has not been good for some time, and a change of climate may be beneficial. A lioom iu iU-al Ilstatc. Two rival real eastat dealers, F. A. Buikhart and Charles .Metzger, became engaged in a dispute on First street yesterday afternoon, and settled their trouble in a bare knuckle contest. In the first round Metzger planted a ferine blow upon BurUhart's chest. The latter re turned the compliment by scrap ing off about an inch of epidermis on the side of his opponent's nose. For a brief second they glared at each other, then began the second round. Metzger struck hard, but Ins blow fell short and be adroitly managed to plant his left eye against Burshart's right. giving"it a sort of puffy expression. Each came up smiling for the next round, when Constable C. G. Bui khart led them off and delivered them over to Marshal Hays. They appeared in Recorder Henton's court and plead not guilty. Their trial will occur at 0 this morning. The O. P. sue. The Oregon Pacific railroad com pany has begun suit in the New ! York courts to restrain the Florida j Steamship company from dispos- j ing of its promissory $115,000, and I the Farmers Loan and Trust com pany from parting with its negotia ble bonds worth $5S,000 both given by the plaintiff in payment last February for the steamer then called the City of Palatka, but now known as the Eastern Oregon. The Oregon Pacific purchased the steamer on the guarantee that her speed was thirteen miles per hour and she could carry 1000 tons of freight. They now claim her speed was misrepresented and she was not in a good condition ami suita ble for work. They began suit to have the sale laid" aside and re cover their notes and bonds, with $50,000 damages. Ileal li narranls Ivsucri. Sparling, who is interested in the electric light works at Seattle, is in the city and will remain some time, lie says the feasibility of a scheme to bring power by electricity from Oregon City and supply East Port land with light, and power to run motors, is being tested. Mr. Spar ling thinks tne object could be ac complished without trouble. A plant of ordinary size could be had for $30,000, with the works located at Oregon City. t.old Match 4.iven Away.
