A good story was told at the re
cent dinner of the Stylus Club
about the narrow escape from
death of a well-known member of
the New Yorn press in St. Andrew's
Church this city. The gentleman
in question, who, by the wav, is
quite a celebrated organist himself
( pipe organ, not hand organ ), was
wandring through the organ loft
of St. Andrew's Church when he
s'ioped and fell into the diapaon
pipe ot the huge instrument. He
went down feet foremost into the
cone of the pipe until he was firmly
wedged .

being about twelve feet from the
top of the pipe, the air soou began
to give out, and he became fright

After spending a night in this
dangerous and dismal hole, and
having in his struggles stripped off
his coat, he wound it about his
waist, so that no air could escape
from belew. Soon he heard the
sonorous tones of the organ, and to
the welcome and inspiring strains
of
"Arise, mv soul, arise,
Shake off thy guilty fears'."
He ascended the pipe until he
reach the top with hi9 hands.
Then he knew that ah had been
pumped in below him, and that by
gradual compression of the air he
had oeen forced up as through
pneumatic tube. As he drew him
self out of the pipe he gave one
jearty and fervent about "Saved !"
which rang above the tones of the
organ and nearly frightened the
organist to death.
As none of the gentlemen who
heard the recital of this sublime
narrative can attest upon their oath
mat it is a prevarication, tney are
obliged to let it go down to pos
terity as a true story.

New York, Feb. 15. A Wash
ington special to the Times says:
"Win. Walter Pheieps is quoted as
saying to a Southern man that it
was altogether probable that Sen
ator Hiscock, of New York, would
become a e.a t o:Blai. e and that
he would go into the national con
vention with New York, New Jer
sey, and all other Eastern and
Middle states, except Connecticut,
behind him. This report has made
Hiscock an important lactor in
politics. It looks, however, as if
the result of the publication of
Blaine's letter would be to encour
age all aspirants,- for the presidency
to make heroic efforts to .enlarge
their respective tollowings m the
national convention, and then per
haps under the inspiration of a
Kansas and California hurrah,
break for Blain and nominate him
by acclamation on the first ballot.
All his friends agree that he would
not refuse the nomination under
these circumstances.

The old saying "it is better to be
born lucky than rich," finds a lit
eral application in the case of the
beautiful English woman Mrs.
Langtry. She has settled in Cali
fornia, and invested in land in Ne
vada. It is. now said that some
two months ago the contractors in
boring an artesian well for Mrs.
Langtry, the actress, near the foot
of the mountain where the North
Carson mine is situated, came on a
formation of rock which lay be
tween the clay walls. This forma
tion was so hard that .the drill
bounded up, and it required seven
feet bf drilling to penetrate and
reach the under clay wall. When
the debris of the rock came to the
surface it attracted the attention of
the borers. A few ounces ot the
rock was taken to the Bullion and
Exchange bank, where it was as
sayed. The assay was $510 a ton
of rich silver ore. Since then ex
perts have been making an exami
nation seeking to trace the ledge to
its croppings and determine the
character of the enclosing walls
Discoveries last week seem to show
that the ledge runs all the way
from 7 to 120 feet thick. The ex
citement over the discovery is now
great, and it is probable that much
