Wholesale Arrests for Disturbing Quietness (?) of Th6ir Meetings- the A row occurred at the Salvation Army tia.ll Saturday night, which resulted yesterday in the arrest of about a doaen of the young men who were present, on a charge of disturbing their meeting. As they could not all be tried together one of the defenants, Pete Mont gomery, was arraigned at 1 p. m. in Justice Dorris' court to answer to the charge. A jury trial was had, at which the evidence showed that the Salvationists were about as implicated as those who were arrested. At the conclusion of the testimony the prosecuting attorney L. H. Montr yne moved to dismiss the case, but the jury were in structed by the court and retired for deliberation. They returned in about five minutes with a ver dict of not guilty. The attorneys for the defense were Capt N. B. Humphrey, W. K. Bilyeu and D. 11. X. Blackburn. The complaints against the others were dismissed. It is understood that complaints against some others, including one or two members of the Salvation .Army, will be lodged to-day for as sault, and battery. It is certainly the duty of the city officials to see that young men i do not interrupt anv religious meetings in the city, but these Sal vation Army sluggers, who go down into the street after their meetings have adjourned to in dulge in a free light with bovs ought not to expect much sym pathy if thev are -also run in, and taught by an aj p. n ation of law that religious teaching can net be administered in a well regulated city after that fashion. It might 1 be a noteworthy fact that a large percentage of the arrests for dis turbing the peace and fighting in the city occurs in and about the Salvation Armv hall. IIEATU OF &AMIEL CO WAS. ! On the 3d inst. a son of Mr. O. P. Coshow was kicked over the left temple and side of the head by a horse in the stable, and late last night was still in an uncon scious state, but breathing quite regular, though as in great suffer ing. Drs. Starr and Crawford were called, and everything is being done for the unfortunate young man. Our broom factory is beginning to introduce their brooms, and are making a good article and should receive every encouragement from our town There are many open in :s for more factories here, for with the wat er power and the j nearness to sucn nne tanner re sources up the Calapooia we ought to have plenty cf woodworking machinery constantly running, to keej pace with our woolen mills, sawmills tannery, etc. Since the advent of fine weather here of late, we hear considerable talk about the new mines on the head of the Calapooia and Blue rivers, and it looks now as if there would be quite a rush in the spring as soon as the snow is gone. The chances look favorable for a quartz mill to be put in these mines earlv next summer by parties from this place, and it is said that San Fran cisco capital is being invested there this winter. The Cascade moun tains, from the head of the Clacka mas to the head of the Coast fork, are. going to be more thoroughly prospected this coming summer than ever before, and the show for good ledges of gold and silver bear ing quartz is favorable. The time is fast approaching for something to tie done in this great mineral belt, and if our own people will not take hold of the matter and other enterprising men will, and we are not surprised to hear that Cali fornians are preparing to taite hold of what ought to belong to us. ith the completion of the narrow gauge to Portland, and the opening , oi a gooa wagon roaa up tne t-aia pooia to tap tins great body tap this great of timber and extensive min ing district, we look for a boom here this coming year or in the near future.
