This important question is still being discussed by the newspapers and the people, and is being urged upon congress by a large majority of the people. It is also a notice able fact that the oi p se -s of the measure among the newspapers come from those who have, or think they can procure, a monop- oly of the news dispatches to the exclusion of their less wealthy cotemporaries. In an exhaustive article upon the subject, in the Forum, Senator Cullom gives some very pertinent facts and figures, showing not only the feasibility of the plan, but also its economy. He brings the facts into a nutshell in this paragraph : "If the government, by under taking the telegraph business, can accomplish here what has been ac complished in England; if it can establish 'a cheaper, more widely extended, and more expeditious' service ; if it can extend the wires to the interior towns not now reached; if it can accommodate twice or three times as many places and people as the private monopoly now does ; if it can furnish better service at less than half the present rates; and. if it can enable every daily paper, no matter where published, to obtain cheaply and promptly the news of the world, surely the government could perform no grander or more beneficient service for the people." It is clearly apparent that the matter not only comes before con ' gress as an undeniable constitu tional measure, but it also comes as a distinctly appropriate and legitimate undertaking, having in its elements and application the functions and efficient service of onr present postal department of the government. There is not an individual that will claim that private corporations would give us as cheap, widespread and effective service as the postal regulations da now. Then why not extend the same news extending telegraph system ? Senator Cullom disposes of the only valid objection to the goverr- ment control of the telegraph the expansion of the patronage of tlu- administration in the appointing r oi officers as follows: "The;ob-J jection most seriouslv urged against i a postal telegraph is. that its es-' tablishrnent would plae too much powey in the hands of the political; r:rty in control of the government by adding enormously to the al- j ready large patronage of the post-. olfiVe department. This objection ; lias not prevented the extension of the postal service hitherto, and will not in the future. The army of employes in the postal service ; is increasing constantly. The tel-: egraph is properly a branch of the j postal service, and there is no j more reason to be alarmed at the I increase of officials from the addi tion of a new branch to that sys tem than from the extension of branches now in operation. Prac tically, there is less reason for alarm on this account in establish- j ing a postal telegraph than in ex- i ' tending the present system. It : ronnirpa rtfi-itil truininir and fittips ! for the work to be a telegraph I operator, and these places could ! not be triven as rewards for nolit-i ical service, as is the case in the postoflices." He would sing. . Is the field of mining enter prises it would seem as though there was a fine opening for pros pecting for paying coal veins. In San Francisco alone during the month of January there was a de ficiency of over twenty-six thous and tons of coal, forcing consumers to fall back upon wood, with oak wood bringing ten to twelve dollars per cord. There has already been many discoveries of coal in differ ent parts of the state announced, some in this county, and it would certainly pay to look the matter up and develop any vein of coal mav ! be found, !
