Douglas, representing the Merchants' Retail Commercial Agency , of San Francisco, has been in the city for several days. A number of prominent business men in Aibanv have become members. (Albany needs a board of trade, stk-ra .and Eugene each have one, tifrousih which questions of public importance and progress are pro moted. A board of trade in this city could be made productive of many advantages. W. F. Read, successor to N. H. Allen, is adding an ' immense line of new spring goods to his stock. The painters and paper hangers have penetrated every nook and coper of the store, which is one of the neatest in the city. J. G. Crawford, the photograph er,! is using a new process of taking interior views after night. It is lohe by magnesium light, and pro duces a most mellow and yet clear picture. He obtained a good in terior view of his gallery last night. Little boys, if they play with firearms, will semi-occasional ly furnish the newspapers a good item. Two email boys at the Al bany college the other day acci dentally shot through a window, narrowly missing a teacher's Lead with tiie ball, as it whizzed into the blackboard. The opera "Nanoii" by the Tyke opera company Friday evening waj? very enjoyable, but it was very outre for the star, Miss Win stiiii, and other leading members off the company to giggle on the stage, especially in the face of such an immense audience as the one rjy wiucii tney were greeted on i that evening. They even forgot a Portion of their lines, which caused the opera to be very much abbre . viated and to lose some of its most brilliant passages. It would not sound well abroad to have it said that Albany, the most progressive city in the valley, lias let the contract for city print ing at ten cents per square. It wbuld be ridiculous ami would savor too much of hard times. The city ought to rebuke such at tempts to bid prices down to piuper rates by paying, wherever tile printing is one, enough at lqast to pay for setting the type. This will b"e a matter to be con sidered at the next regular meet ing, of the city council. AX ERA OF GUOWTH. Some of the Building aad Improvements Planned ;for the Coming Season. Evidence of the fact that there will be no cessation in the busv era of grow th which Albany has taken on during the past year and a half is exhibited by the plans made for new buildings and improve ments during the coming season, and tiie fact that even during the winter work has not been suspend ed on brick buildings now in pro cess of construction. It is too early yet to predict defi nitely as to the extent of building to be done, but present indica tions show that the outlav will be heavy. Messrs. Foshay "& Mason and Tweedate & Hopkins have al ready completed plans fur an ele irant brick where the latter's store now stands, upon which work will be commenced early, the brick be ing now nearly all on the ground. The Masonic lodges of the city are arranging for erecting a fine brick this season, for which pur pose a meeting was held last niirht. Judge K. S. Slralian is having plans prepared lor a two-story orick, to go up where his wooden buildings were recently destroved bv tire, and it is likely'that V. L. Vance will also erect a large brick on the corner adjoining Judge Strahan's. Messrs. Cowan & Cusick expect to erect a fine brick on the corner they purchased last year from Dr. F. O'Toole, in which event they svill buiid a tine corner, to be occu pied by the Linn County Bank, and other business rooms. Plans are being made for other buildings and a" large number of residences. There is now not a vacant dwelling in the city and the demand far exceeds the supplv. This has led to a sham advance in All this is indicative of a steadilv increasing population and a health v growth. Aiuany nas taKen on a tit I . . arrow th which cannot he stopped. The citv has two as good hotels as they "can be made in their present buildings, but they are wooden structures, and j trie growth of the city demands a j good three-story brick hotel. Some j shrewd man with means will come i alontr some day and put up such a j building and make monev out of j the investment. " j " j Lightning Express. They diner in different individuals to some extent. A bilious man is seldom a breakfast eater. Too frequently, alas, lie has an excellent appetite for liquids but none for solids of a morning. His toiiirue will hardly bear inspection at any time; if it is not white and furred, it isrouh, at all events. The digestive svsteni is wholly out of order and diarrhea or con stipation may be a symptom or the two may alternate. There are often hem orrhoids or even loss of blood. There may be giddiness and often headache and acidity orflatulence and tenderness in tiie pit of the stomach. To correct all this if not effect a cure try Green's Au gust Flower, it costs but a trifle and thousands attest its effieacv. The Ounce ol Prevention. The satis'aetion of feeiinir safe from catching any disease from drinking w.iter, froir. impure air, from a sick person, from contact with foul cloth ing, infection or contagion from any source, is complete arid all anxiety allayed by the use of Parbys Prophy lactic Fluid. A bottle will give more safety, comfort and confident than all tiie do jtoring in the world. Ecgese City, Feb. 3. Harvey Stanard of Brownsville spent "Wendesday and Thursday in town visiting friends. Prof. R. B. George of the R. B. George concert company is in the city making arrangements to give a concert and then organize a class in vocal music. A concert under the direction of Prof. Hepburn will be given at the M. E. church some time next week for the benefit of the pipe organ fund of that church. The measles have, been almost epidemic for the last two weeks. They have for the most part been confined to the University stu dents. Thus far all schools hae kept going. Eugene is to have a board of trade. It isn't exactly known what there is for them "to do. but that and the three real estate agencies ought to make things boom anyway. Mr. Frank Crouch, of the Crouch manufacturing company has recently invented a new motor to bemused in electric dyna mos that promises to lessen great tl vr the cost of generating electricity- The first leap year party of 1888 was given at Rhineharts" dancing parlors "Wendesday evening. Lowsox, Feb. 1. Workmen commenced to-day to convert the warehouse at this place into a commodious dancing hall. Fourteen hundred feet of fine flooring will be laid. The hall whfiii completed will accommodate twelve sets and will be lighted with U.S. Electric lamps. W. W. Crawford who has charge of the hall expects to dedicate it in a few days with a grand ball and supper. An effort will be made to secure a special train over the Narrow Guage to accommodate those who wish to attend. Notice will be given as soon as the hall is completed. TJios. Nast. Thos. Nast. the most celebrated caricaturist of the day, will give an exhibition of his work and a lec ture upon caricature, its cause and effect, on Wednesday evening, at the opera house. Mr. Nast need. no introduction to the peoole of Albany, or anv other citv "in the United States," for that matter, as his brilliant political, social and popular points have been reviewed and praised for the last score of years. He is aptly described as a man who makes and unmakes men by a stroke of his pencil, and as a caricaturist has been an important factor in political contest by reason n's remarkable conception of men an their traits.
