narrowly missing a teacher's Lead
with tiie ball, as it whizzed into
the blackboard.

opera company Friday evening

stage, especially in the face of such
an immense audience as the one

that evening. They even forgot a

the opera to be very much abbre
. viated and to lose some of its most
brilliant passages.
It would not sound well abroad
to have it said that Albany, the
most progressive city in the valley,
lias let the contract for city print
ing at ten cents per square. It
wbuld be ridiculous ami would
savor too much of hard times.
The city ought to rebuke such at
tempts to bid prices down to
piuper rates by paying, wherever
tile printing is one, enough at
lqast to pay for setting the type.
This will b"e a matter to be con
sidered at the next regular meet
ing, of the city council.

Planned ;for the Coming Season.
Evidence of the fact that there
will be no cessation in the busv
era of grow th which Albany has
taken on during the past year and a
half is exhibited by the plans made
for new buildings and improve
ments during the coming season,
and tiie fact that even during the
winter work has not been suspend
ed on brick buildings now in pro
cess of construction.
It is too early yet to predict defi
nitely as to the extent of building
to be done, but present indica
tions show that the outlav will be
heavy. Messrs. Foshay "& Mason
and Tweedate & Hopkins have al
ready completed plans fur an ele
irant brick where the latter's store
now stands, upon which work will
be commenced early, the brick be
ing now nearly all on the ground.
The Masonic lodges of the city
are arranging for erecting a fine
brick this season, for which pur
pose a meeting was held last niirht.
Judge K. S. Slralian is having
plans prepared lor a two-story
orick, to go up where his wooden
buildings were recently destroved
bv tire, and it is likely'that V. L.
Vance will also erect a large brick
on the corner adjoining Judge
Strahan's.
Messrs. Cowan & Cusick expect
to erect a fine brick on the corner
they purchased last year from Dr.
F. O'Toole, in which event they
svill buiid a tine corner, to be occu
pied by the Linn County Bank, and
other business rooms.
Plans are being made for other
buildings and a" large number of
residences. There is now not a
vacant dwelling in the city and the
demand far exceeds the supplv.

death of Mrs. J. M. Nolan at Cor
vallis. tdie is a sister of James
Callahau of this city and had many
friends here, who will be grieved
to hear of her death. The funeral

The annual meeting of the Linn
County Temperance Alliance is
called to meet in Iialsey, Wednes
day, Feb. 15, at 2 o'clock p. m. All

convert the warehouse at this
place into a commodious dancing
hall. Fourteen hundred feet of fine
flooring will be laid. The hall

Crawford who has charge of the
hall expects to dedicate it in a few
days with a grand ball and supper.
An effort will be made to secure
a special train over the Narrow
Guage to accommodate those who

Burglar Eyan Taken From the Peniten
tiary to he Eetried in This City.

Salem, Feb. 4. Deputy Sheriff
Humphrey, of Linn county, this
evening took to Albany J.C. Eyan,
who was recently granted a new
trial by the supreme court. He
has been in prison several months.
The above dispatch was received
at this office last night. Rvan
was arrested at Scio last fall on a
charge 'of burglary with intent to
commit rape- upon the person of
Ella Mack. He was indicted by
the grand jury in this city for
simply burglary, but the jury re
turned a verdict of assault with in
tent to commit rape, and he was
sentenced under this verdict. The
supreme court held that he could
not be convicted upon a charge for
which he was not indicted, and
granted hirn a new trial. He was
brought to this city last night and
incarcerated in the county jail to
await trial at the next term of the
circuit court which convenes in
March. .
